A NEW SPECIES OF FLY, CALLED BEYONCÉ
Many artists, politicians and personalities must dream of the day when their name is used to refer to a street, an award or some discovery. Something like this has just happened to the singer Beyoncé, who we do not know if she really liked that a strange Australian fly was baptized after her.
It so happens that this insect, originally from the Australian state of Queensland, has a golden abdomen, exactly the same color that Beyoncé wears near her hip in the 2001 Destiny's Child video "Bootylicious". Therefore, the scientists decided to name this specimen Scaptia (Plinthina) beyonceae.
According to Bryan Lessard, an entomologist at the Commonwealth of Australia Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO), the brilliance of this insect makes it "the diva of flies of all time."
(These scientists need to go out more).
Lessard explained that the fly was also named that because they wanted to demonstrate "the funny side of taxonomy." Name, these scientists really know how to have fun.
Although these flies are considered a pest, Lessard considers them "very important for the pollination of plants."
Another nice cultural and scientific fact: Beyonceae was discovered in 1981, the same year the singer was born.
Although the investigating commission has tried to contact Beyoncé, they have not received a response. Like when the nerd in class talks to the pretty girl in the classroom and she doesn't answer him.
By the way, this is not the first time that an insect has been named after an artist. According to the ABC station there is already a spider named Neil Young and a Roy Orbison beetle.
If Mexican scientists discovered new species of oxen, donkeys, cockroaches or ticks, there would be plenty of names to baptize them ... more in electoral year.
