Dress that Marilyn Monroe wore to JFK's birthday is auctioned for 4.8 mln dollars
The skintight dress Marilyn Monroe wore when she sang "Happy Birthday" to then-US President John F. Kennedy at a Democratic Party gala in May 1962 was sold for $ 4.8 million in a auction held in Los Angeles.
US franchise Ripley’s Believe it or Not purchased the sequined dress designed by Jean Louis, Beverly Hills auction house Julien’s Auctions said in a statement.
Due to the skin color of the dress, so tight that it had to be sewn on the actress, it gave the impression that Monroe was naked.
"Marilyn Monroe singing 'Happy Birthday Mr. President' is surely one of the most famous impromptu performances in American history," said Darren Julien, president and CEO of Julien’s Auctions.
Monroe, the star of such films as "One Eve and Two Adams" and "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes," died of an overdose less than three months after the gala. The song, breathy intoned with a sensual tone, was for Kennedy's 45 years, which he celebrated a few weeks later. The president was assassinated the following year.
The late fund manager Martin Zweig bought the dress in 1999 for $ 1.26 million at a Christie’s auction, Julien’s Auctions said. The dress is one of several items from the actress's life that the auction house offers during a three-day sale. Monroe would have turned 90 in 2016.
