Today we will talk about two rulers in the music scene of the last century: the king of rock and roll Elvis Presley and the king of pop Michael Jackson. Both, since their arrival in the record industry, have changed its fortunes, imposing a model imposed by them and which has entered the iconography of pop culture and which is still a reference model for many artists. See the elements that most evidently unite the two American singers.
ELVIS AND JACKSON: HUMBLE ORIGINS
Starting from the first element that is found chronologically in anyone's biography, namely birth, we can see how both Elvis and Michael Jackson were born in a very humble context, not to mention poverty. Elvis was born in Tupelo, Mississippi, on January 8, 1935 in a small log cabin built by the singer's father. The house was located in a poor area of the town, bordering the ghetto where the black population was confined. This was a fundamental element in his musical training, as he was able to listen to the blues, a genre normally snubbed by Caucasians. On the other hand, Michael Jackson was born on August 29, 1958 in Gary, Indiana, and was the seventh of ten children. The entire Jackson family lived in a small brick house at 2300 Jackson Street.
ELVIS AND JACKSON: THE RELATIONSHIP WITH THE FATHER
A second point in common between the two artists is the relationship with the father figure. Elvis, especially as a child, had little contact with his father, especially when he was arrested and remained in prison for a few months for forging a signature on a check. Another moment of confrontation was when his father Vernon remarried, following the death of his mother Gladys in 1958, when Elvis did not show up for the wedding. Nonetheless, over the years the two got closer. Jackson, on the other hand, has publicly stated that for years his father, especially in the days of the Jackson Five, when Michael was in fact a child, used to beat his children and insult them in case of mistakes or in choreography or in singing. In one interview in particular, the king of pop declared that the insults his father threw at him were aimed at the appearance of his nose.
ELVIS AND JACKSON: THEIR REGGES
The two kings are also united by the particularity of their kingdoms, of their dream palaces. Elvis's was called, and is called, Graceland, the name with which the villa was identified previously, and which Presley bought in 1957. From that moment on he implemented several structural changes, building rooms that followed his taste, among which stand out the so-called Jungle room, furnished in an exotic style, and the television room, where Elvis used to watch three televisions at the same time. Graceland has been open to visitors since the early 1980s and is currently the second most visited residence in the United States after the White House. Michael Jackson was certainly no less: his Neverland was a sort of enchanted land that entered the imagination of all his fans. He bought it in 1988 after a long negotiation and immediately had it added: a go-kart track, a Ferris wheel, an arcade, a theater / cinema, a zoo and several funfair-style rides. Jackson used to invite children and teenagers from difficult situations to this island of his to try to make him spend pleasant hours.
ELVIS AND JACKSON: THE TRAGIC DEATH
As we analyzed the birth before, we will now take a look at the deaths of the two planetary stars. In this case it is possible to make a unique speech: both were found lifeless after taking excessive amounts of drugs prescribed by their doctors. In this regard, Lisa Marie Presley, who is linked to the two as Elvis's daughter and Michael's wife, said that the latter confessed to her that he was afraid of ending up like Elvis. Furthermore, following the death of both, conspiracy hypotheses about a possible staging were born.
