Donald Trump and Melania: the truth about their turbulent love story
Presidential elections in the United States are not resolved in a day or a week, but in months. Primary elections, rallies, conventions and face-to-face debates mark the path of a long and complex electoral process in the North American country that will finally culminate this Tuesday, November 3, in the so-called 'Election Day'.
Today will be the day on which it will be decided whether Republican Donald Trump renews his mandate for another four years in the White House or if, on the contrary, the Democratic candidate, Joe Biden, takes the position from him.
In connection with this significant date, we are going to remember in Dolcevita how the love story between Trump and Melania has been and is.
Fashion brought Melania and Donald Trump together
Melanija Knavs (50), as she is really called, was born in 1970 in Novo Mesto, a large town in present-day Slovenia, then Yugoslavia, which was under the communist dictatorship. There she grew up with her father, Viktor, her mother Amalija Knavs, and her sister Inés.
Melanija went to Ljubljana to study Architecture and Design at university, but her stature and attractiveness caught the attention of businessman and modeling agency founder Paolo Zampolli, who offered to get her a visa to work in the United States.
Shortly after, in 1996, she left for New York, where her career in fashion soared after meeting the great model representative Eileen Ford. With Ford, and already with her westernized name, Melania Knauss made a lot of money and was the cover of important magazines such as Vogue, Avenue and Harper’s Baazar.
Those who knew her at that time say of Melania that she was only in fashion to earn money, and that she took her work very seriously. "She didn't go out partying and strictly ate five to seven vegetables and fruits every day and drank a lot of water. What she wanted was to earn money as a model," said her then-roommate, photographer Matthew Atanian.
Fashion is what ended up uniting Melania and Donald Trump (74). In 1998, when Melania was 28, she met Donald Trump at a party during New York Fashion Week. Trump, then, was 52 years old, with four children and a second divorce on top.
As Melania said in an interview, Trump approached her to ask for her number and she said no, to give him hers. Then the tycoon, who had come to the party with another woman, gave him all his numbers: the office number, the Mar-a-Lago number, and his house number in New York.
After that, they began a romance and she was greatly benefited in terms of her career in fashion. It is true that she had never been lacking before, but she never became a top model.
A turbulent courtship
Shortly after that meeting in New York, Melania and Trump began dating. "I was shocked with his energy. He has an impressive vitality. He has a brilliant mind, he is a very intelligent person," she said in those years when they asked her what she liked about her partner.
Everything went well between them until some breakups came, around the year 2000, after he discovered that Trump was dating other women, such as Norwegian businesswoman Celina Midelfart.
Despite everything, they ended up coming back, and six years after they met they got married. The 2004 New York Fashion Week was the setting chosen by Trump to make the marriage proposal, with a ring of 1.5 million dollars.
Wedding and an only child
She accepted the marriage petition and the two ended up getting married in 2005, at the Bethesda-by-the-Sea Episcopal Church. The link was attended by 400 guests, including personalities such as Heidi Klum and Tony Bennett, the Clintons and members of the royalty such as Alberto de Monaco and Carlos de Inglaterra.
In 2006, a year after 'I do', the couple's only child was born, the first for Melania and the fifth for Trump, named Barron William. Melania devoted herself entirely to his care and education, gradually withdrawing from the public scene.
What is truth in your love story?
What we have told you so far is objective data, with dates, places and characters. But if you look at the photos, there is a clear difference in her: Melania Trump's eyes no longer have an iota of the joy and vivacity of the beginning. Perhaps where there was love today there is only a forced pose.
It is true that when a person grows up they can lose that dose of magic and magnetism, but everything seems to indicate that between the marriage there is little life in common, nothing that unites them, apart from the White House and the child.
The American media always speculate that Melania and Trump lead separate lives, and Google, in this regard, revealed a few years ago that one of the main searches of Americans was "why is Melania Trump always sad?"
