Johnny Depp has announced that he will no longer play as Gellert Grindelwald in the Fantastic Beasts saga. The actor makes it known, through a letter addressed to his fans, published on his social profiles, that he has been fired from Warner Bros.


The reason for the dismissal

Warner asked Depp to leave the project after the eclectic interpreter lost the libel suit against The Sun, which in 2018 accused him of being a "wifey hitter", referring to the allegations of his ex-wife. Then the announcement of the dismissal by Warner Bros: "Secondly - continues the letter - I would like to let you know that Warner Bros has asked me to abandon the role of Gellert Grindelwald in the Fantastic Beasts saga. I respectfully accepted this request ”.


Finally, writes Depp: “I would like to say this: The surreal judgment of the British court will not change my desire to tell the truth and I confirm that I am planning to appeal the sentence. My determination remains strong and I intend to prove that these allegations against me are unfounded. My life and my career will not be defined from this moment ”.


Confirmation from Warner

The famous US film and television production company officially confirmed the news through a statement and announced a recasting for the role of the powerful dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald, in view of the third installment of the saga which should arrive in theaters in the summer of 2022.


“Johnny Depp is leaving the Fantastic Beasts franchise. We thank Johnny for his work on him in the films in which he has appeared. Fantastic Beasts 3 is currently in production, and the role of Grindelwald will be reassigned. The film will hit theaters around the world in the summer of 2022. ", reads the Warner statement.
