Johnny Depp loses appeal to judge who rejected his lawsuit against the Sun
British judge Andrew Nicol denied Johnyy Depp an authorization to appeal the actor's claim against The Sun, the newspaper that accused him of being a "wife beater."
The judge who dismissed Johny Depp's defamation lawsuit against the British newspaper The Sun on Wednesday rejected the American actor's appeal.
Depp has, however, the possibility of appealing again to a higher court, between now and December 7.
"I denied the plaintiff permission to appeal," said the judge, Andrew Nicol. "I do not consider that the grounds of appeal invoked have a reasonable prospect of success, and there is no other compelling reason why the claim should be settled," he added.
The actor made the risky decision to attack News Group Newspapers (NGN), publisher of the British newspaper The Sun, for defamation, which accused him of beating his ex-wife Amber Heard.
The proceedings, held before the High Court of London, stemmed from an April 2018 headline in which The Sun wondered how British writer J.K. Rowling could take on this "wife beater" in the movie Fantastic Beasts.
After weeks of trial in July, which led to the disclosure of unknown aspects of the private lives of the 57-year-old actor and his ex-wife, the High Court of London dismissed Depp's claim, considering that the qualifiers of The Sun newspaper were " substantially true "since" most of the alleged attacks were proven. "
