Lady Di and the curse of the Princess of Wales title: neither Kate nor Camilla want it
Camilla could have received that treatment, but she declined. Kate, in the future, it is possible that I reject it ... Why does no one want to receive those honors?
There is only one Lady Di, but Princess of Wales is a title that has had many owners: María de Teck, Carolina de Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel or Augusta de Sajonia-Gotha, among others. Without wanting to get too academic or wanting to go too far back in history, we will just say that the treatment of Prince of Wales is, since 1301, the title of the heir to the British monarchs and, by extension, that of princess is the one adopted by his wife. This was the case with the women we have mentioned and also with Diana Spencer, who after her wedding to Charles of England became Diana of Wales. Following that same 'royal mechanism', Camilla Parker Bowles should have received that treatment, but she did not, she preferred that of Duchess of Cornwall, and Kate could also receive it when, in a future UK, Carlos reigns and he is the heir. But surely it also rejects the title.
All the experts in the British Royal House agree that the figure of Lady Di is still so strong and so beloved today that it makes it impossible for any wife of a British heir to use that title. More than two decades have passed since that fateful accident that ended her life, but her figure is still present. A lot, for some (herself and Carlos himself) too much.
The fact that she continues to be so remembered, together with that halo of 'holiness' that has surrounded her after her disappearance, pushed Camilla (the third in contention in that great story of heartbreak) to prefer not to use the title. Although she is legally Princess Consort of Wales after the death of Diana of Wales (she retained the title for life after her divorce), out of deference to the memory of the late Princess of the British Royal Household, she dispenses with the use of this title. It is also true that no one in the UK and part of the rest of the planet would forgive her.
For her part, Kate Middleton received various titles when she married Prince William in 2011, including Countess of Strathearn when in Scotland and Lady Carrickfergus when in Northern Ireland; however, she has kept the Duchess of Cambridge. She too, when William moves from second to first on the list to the British throne, can choose to be called Princess of Wales, but, according to expert Imogen Lloyd-Webber, she will not either. Diana, like El Cid (and now, updating files, like Camilo Sesto), continues to win battles even after her death.
