Trump undoes (tie knot)
During the 2016 campaign and throughout his tenure, the President of the United States has made his bright red tie a symbol of victory. But after the rally in Tulsa, it looked like a sign of defeat.
It is the image of the tie, like the echo of the words, that endures. The tie was no longer tied in its big, boastful knot, but hung limp around the neck, like a boxer on the ropes. The tie, which has been the closest thing to a sartorial animal spirit that US President Donald Trump has ever owned - along with his red MAGA cap (for Make America Great Again) and elaborate hair - was completely undone.
The tie as it was in the early hours of Sunday, when the president arrived at the Andrews military base after his ill-fated campaign rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma and then landing by helicopter at the White House and crossing the South Lawn, with the MAGA cap crushed in one hand. The tie as most observers could never remember seeing before, at least around this president's neck.
Together, the two accessories created an image as striking as that of the sparsely populated rows in Tulsa and its deserted outdoor area. And so potentially symbolic, though probably not in the way Trump would like.
