Give Melania Trump the respect she deserves as First Lady

Regarding “Trump will not stop fighting for you,” (A1, Aug. 26): Thank you for putting Melania Trump’s photo on the front page of Wednesday’s paper. She delivered an excellent speech supporting her husband and highlighting the many causes she has pursued as first lady. She is an intelligent and well-educated woman who speaks several languages. She did not seek the spotlight, but has adapted beautifully amid the rude treatment she has received. And for those who watched the Republican convention Tuesday evening, you saw highlights of all the wonderful work she does with children and the fight against opiates.

Of course, most people don’t know that because of the total boycott of her and her work since entering the White House. It is criminal how all magazine media have shunned her.

It’s time to stop the hate, media bias and outright rudeness to the sitting first lady. This three-and-a-half years of bad behavior would not have been tolerated by the media against any other first lady. They hate President Donald Trump so much because he beat their candidate they are taking it out on his wife. It is beyond my comprehension and it needs to stop now. Enough is enough. Treat Melania Trump with respect for the gracious lady she is, just as you have treated all other first ladies.

Regarding “Don’t expect any ‘vote your conscience’ moments at 2020 RNC,” (A3, Aug. 26): Erica Grieder proposed we “vote our conscience” in the presidential election in November. That is like saying that for a very serious health operation, it is best to choose the physician solely by how you feel about who is best; and don’t bother to get references, check his medical credentials and experience, and discuss his plan moving forward. Emotions are wonderful if used in their proper place in life, but certainly not to choose a politician in a presidential election.

Regarding “Protests go from streets to court,” (A1, Aug. 27): Kind of sad that, due to some players refusing to play in an NBA playoff game, the NBA canceled all the scheduled playoff games for that evening — and nobody really cared! Without the media hyping it, no one would have noticed. These spoiled, rich jocks need to realize that their value is in entertaining the viewers and customers, and that people really don’t care about their political opinions. They can continue to sit out, boycott, protest, etc. It’s a free country, but they may be “killing the goose that laid the golden egg.”
