Infidelity and abandonment: The troubled relationship between Angelina Jolie and her father, Jon Voight
John Voight is a well-known American actor, yet he is not only famous for his work in the film industry, but also for his tumultuous relationship with his daughter, Angelina Jolie.
Voight was married twice in his life and his second wife, aspiring actress Marcheline Bertrand, gave birth to a pair of children named Angelina and James. Voight and Bertrand separated after five years of marriage and finally divorced two years later, but what did the actor do that earned the hatred of his children for so many years?
A broken relationship.
Angelina and Jon had a very complicated relationship mainly because after the divorce, Jolie explained that her father cheated on her mother and abandoned her to her fate, with two children and without taking responsibility for anything.
When Bertrand passed away in 2007, Angelina confessed a sad truth about her mother:
My mom gave up her dreams and aspirations to marry him and he was never close.
According to Express, Jon emotionally abused Marcheline, apologizing because "it's a Hollywood star thing."
Angelina went through very difficult times growing up, I felt a lot of hostility towards her father.
Psychologists blamed Voight for Angelina's mental problems, claiming that her string of failed marriages, alleged drug abuse, depression, and suicidal thoughts were all because she developed abandonment issues after her father left the family.
Despite their differences, father and daughter managed to iron out their rough edges in the end.
Reconciliation.
Apparently, after Voight became a grandfather, his relationship with his daughter changed for the better. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Jolie stated:
Jon and I have gotten to know each other better, through his grandchildren, and now we find a new way to bond.
The actress revealed that the secret that keeps them at peace is the fact that they no longer talk about politics. It's strange to think that after all these years of rivalry, politics is what kept them apart. Nonetheless, we're pleased to hear that the two of you finally made it up.
