Since the election of her husband, Melania Trump has indeed stayed away, giving very few interviews and only exceptionally agreeing to speak in public. This discretion is explained by the outcry over his speech at the Convention four years ago, where entire passages had been copied and pasted from a speech by Michelle Obama, but also and above all, by his accent. The First Lady, born in Slovenia, would be quite simply embarrassed by the latter.
