Who could run for the United States elections in 2024? Donald Trump, AOC, Kamala Harris and more
Who could appear on the ballot in the 2024 presidential race?
The 2020 presidential election is still undecided, but that hasn't stopped speculation about the 2024 race.
With Donald Trump almost ready to become president for a term, and Biden, who will take office at 78, is unlikely to run the campaign a second time, a host of names (new and old) could appear on the campaign trail. ballot in four years, for both Democrats and Republicans.
Donald trump
Donald Trump could return as a candidate in the next election.
Bryan Lanza, who served on Trump's transition team as director of communications in 2016, recently said the Republican president would be in a "good position to run again" in 2024.
"He has the apparatus, he has the support. If he lost a very close election today, he can say that it was not a fair and free election," Lanza told the BBC.
"I think he can make a strong case to run again and I think the Republicans would step aside and let it happen," Lanza said, "and there is no one in the Republican party who can challenge President Trump in the primaries."
Whether Republicans opposed such a move remains in question, as Trump was able to garner more than 67 million votes Tuesday, despite opinion polls, the economic collapse and the coronavirus pandemic.
Still, Trump has publicly admitted that the presidency was "lonely" and "petty," so maybe America will never be great again?
Kanye west
The American rapper and billionaire had announced a bid for the 2024 election more than a year ago, when he told a New York audience that he was "not going to run, I'm going to walk" in 2024.
He went on to announce a somewhat controversial 2020 campaign, which missed many state deadlines to register as a candidate before it even started.
West, who denied claims that he was in cahoots with Republicans in an attempt to disrupt opportunities for Democrats, got just 57,000 votes Tuesday.
Betting on another presidential race, he shared a photo on Twitter with his silhouette against an electoral map of the United States and wrote "Kanye 2024."
Donald Trump Jr.
The president's eldest son suggested last month that the heads of the Liberals would "explode" should he run for president in the next election, while posing with a banner reading "Don Jr 2024."
While he has avoided speculation about a future career in politics, Donald Trump Jr. has long been idealized as "the emotional center of the MAGA (Make America Great Again) universe," as Jason Miller, a senior campaign adviser, recently put it. Trump, to the New York Times.
But most Americans are not so sure, with just 16 percent of voters saying he should go into politics, according to a poll by The Independent.
His brothers fared no better in the poll, in an apparent blow to the Trump family that is following the same path as the Roosevelts, Kennedys, Bushes and Clintons among America's political dynasties.
Ivanka Trump
"Everyone is screaming Ivanka," President Donald Trump said while campaigning in Florida recently, warning that Kamala Harris, the Democratic vice presidential candidate, "will not be the first female president."
The 38-year-old, who, like her brother, has remained shy about her own political aspirations, has repeatedly insisted that she was focused on supporting her father in the White House and on the election campaign.
Trump went on to say that his daughter would rather "be at home with the kids" than "work out" on her behalf, and most Americans surveyed for The Independent seemed to agree.
Trump's prospects, among Trump supporters, were even worse than Trump Jr's, with just 31% saying he should follow in his father's footsteps, while 36% thought it was a bad idea.
Eric trump
President Donald Trump's second son, although less well known, could follow in his father's footsteps and run for president in 2024.
As executive vice president of the Trump Organization and a Trump campaign surrogate, the 36-year-old arguably has more political experience than the 2016 Republican nominee, and recently indicated that he may be interested in a 2024 White House run.
Observing users on social media noted last month that he liked a tweet that read "Eric Trump 2024," in what was the surest move yet that would at least entertain such a feat.
Marco Rubio
The 2016 Republican senator and presidential candidate Marco Rubio more recently suggested that he could give a second chance to the presidency in 2024.
"I ran for president once before, so clearly I'm not going to tell anyone that I'm not interested in running for president - I already ran once," he told CNN when asked about a 2024 run.
Rubio, whose previous attempt was ultimately defeated by Donald Trump's candidacy, struggled to gain ground in the 2016 Republican primary, but could be more successful next time.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez
After voters chose between the two oldest presidential candidates in history this week, they may find that the 2024 presidential race looks very different and much younger than in 2020.
And that, in part, could be due to the candidacy of the progressive Democratic congresswoman and member of the “Squad”, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who will have turned 35 by the time of the next presidential race.
Joe Biden, who will assume the presidency at age 78, is expected to serve just one term, allowing the next generation of Democrats to enter the fray.
In March of this year, Ocasio-Cortez told her supporters that when it comes to a presidential candidacy, "I am not a person who aspires to a position, I aspire to a mission."
Still, the 31-year-old Ocasio-Cortez was the most popular bet among those who bet on the 2024 presidential race, Forbes reported.
Kamala harris
California senator and upcoming vice president-elect Kamala Harris has set out to run for president in 2024, with the next four years as an act of preparation for a second presidential race.
Harris, who will become the first female vice president of the United States, will have already broken a precedent before 2024 rolls around and is a proven activist.
In fact, the Democrat is already a pioneer in winning in 2024, according to bookmakers and Business Insider, having performed solidly against Vice President Mike Pence in a debate last month.
The next four years will prove to be a test of Harris's approach to governing alongside Biden, and her appeal to Americans.
