As a result of the chaos on Capitol Hill, will Donald Trump be impeached?

Those who have been opposing Donald Trump in the two houses of Congress have called for the president of the United States to be removed from office because of the violent invasion of Capitol Hill by a crowd of supporters.

Democratic Senator Chuck Schumer said Donald Trump must be removed immediately. If not, DPR Speaker Nancy Pelosi said she could be impeached.

This rarity requires support from Republicans and so far only a few have supported it.

Four people died during the rioting, and 68 people have now been arrested, as quoted from the BBC website, Friday (8/1/2021).

Police action has come under greater scrutiny after officials have faced criticism for failing to stop the rioters breaking their way onto Capitol Hill.

The official in charge of security at the DPR, Armed Sergeant, has now resigned.

President-elect Joe Biden said: "Nobody can tell me if it was a group of Black Lives Matter protesters yesterday, they are not treated any different from the thugs who stormed the Capitol."

Trump himself hasn't spoken about what's happening on Capitol Hill. However, his press spokesman Kayleigh McEnany said the president and his government condemned the violence.

The chief of the US Capitol Police (USCP) said his officers faced criminal behavior during the action and he described the officer's actions as "heroic".

Pelosi, however, had asked him to resign and the DC Police Union said the USCP leadership was "ill prepared for this attack in both manpower and resources".

Transport Minister Elaine Chao is the last member of the Donald Trump administration to resign over the protests and unrest. Several lower-level officials also resigned.

How have members of parliament responded?

A growing number are calling for Trump to be removed as president. Most of them are Democrats but some Republicans have joined.

"The president shouldn't take office even for the next day," said Schumer, who will lead the Democratic majority in the Senate when the new session starts later this month.

He urged Trump's cabinet to remove him from office using the US Constitution's 25th Amendment, which allows the vice president to act if the president is unable to carry out his duties due to mental or physical illness.

Pelosi described Trump as a "very dangerous man" and said: "This is a state of the greatest emergency."

He left the impeachment option open if Trump's colleagues did not initiate the 25th Amendment process.

However, Democrats will need to count on Republican support to secure the two-thirds majority needed in the Senate to convict Trump under the impeachment section of the constitution, and are unlikely to get those numbers.
