This is what happens when you let Trump throw a party
Blaming the shutdown for a lack of catering, the president of the United States sent hundreds of burgers, fries and pizza
US President Donald Trump had a banquet prepared at the White House with hundreds of hamburgers, fries and other food from some Washington fast food restaurants, saying he had to do it because due to the partial government shutdown (" shutdown ”), the normal catering service was not available. The event was organized to welcome the Clemson Tigers, the winners of the National College Football Championship. To reporters, Trump told reporters that he personally paid the bill for the various fast food restaurants, but did not specify how much he had spent.
The shutdown has been going on for 24 days now and it is not clear when it will end. It is affecting about 800,000 public office employees, including some of the White House staff, forced to take forced holidays or work without pay. Overall, the closure is estimated to affect a quarter of federal business.
Trump has refused to sign the new budget law, because it does not include a $ 5.7 billion expense to begin construction of the wall along the US-Mexico border, as he had repeatedly promised in the election campaign and in his first two years as president. Democrats, who now control the House in Congress, are opposed to funding the initiative and the difference of views has led to a stalemate that has now lasted for weeks, with government offices having to shut down all non-essential activities pending the new budget law.
The fast food banquet was set up using trays, napkins and other tableware bearing the emblems of the United States presidency. The burgers came from various fast food restaurants such as McDonald's and Wendy's, but there were also slices of pizza and some salads.
During the event, Trump said: “We have pizzas, 300 hamburgers, loads of french fries, all your favorite food. I want to see what will remain, because I don't think there will be much progress ”.
