Trump and Pence met in the Oval Office

US President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence met in the Oval Office on Monday evening, a US official told AFP.

The two men, for whom it was the first meeting since the violence on Wednesday at the Capitol, had a "good conversation", according to the same source.

According to this official, Donald Trump does not intend to resign before the end of his mandate on January 20.

For his part, the vice-president does not intend to remove him from his functions by invoking the 25th amendment of the American Constitution, by declaring him, with the support of his principal ministers, unfit to exercise his function.

The president and vice president "reiterated that those who broke the law and invaded the Capitol do not represent the 'America First' movement supported by 75 million Americans," said the official.

“They are committed to continuing their work for the country until the end of their mandate,” he added.

Despite pressure from the tenant of the White House, Mike Pence announced in a letter on Wednesday that he would not oppose the validation of the presidential election results before Congress, igniting the fury of the president and his supporters .

"Mike Pence did not have the courage to do what he should have done to protect our country and our Constitution," Donald Trump tweeted, as a horde of his supporters invaded the Capitol.

Videos posted on social media show a compact crowd chanting "Hang Mike Pence" outside the Capitol. Other activists walked the halls of the temple of American democracy screaming that the vice president was a "coward," according to the New York Times.
