Donald Trump's Farewell Address is Peaceful and Challenging
On Tuesday (20/1/2021) was Donald Trump's last full term as president of the United States (US), before Joe Biden was sworn in on Wednesday (20/1/2021). The 45th US president delivered a farewell address from the White House on the night before Joe Biden's inauguration day.
When blocked from accessing his personal social media accounts, Trump gave a peaceful but defiant tone in a video released via the government's official social media accounts. "We have done what we have to do here, and a lot more," Trump said as reported by the BBC on Tuesday (19/1/2021).
"I took the tough battles, the toughest battles, the hardest choices, because that's what you choose for me to do," he said. Later, he warned that the "greatest danger" now facing this country was "losing faith in our national greatness".
The 74-year-old president has held his post, from "fighting until China is like never before" to "a series of peace deals in the Middle East". He added, "I am very proud to be the first president in decades not to start a new war."
Referring to the riots in the US Capitol on January 6, he said, "All Americans are horrified by the attacks on the Capitol Building ... It can never be tolerated." Trump acknowledged that a new administration would take office, but he said, "I want you to know that the movement we started is just beginning."
