US House of Representatives Speaker: Donald Trump's impeachment will not break unity
US House of Representatives (DPR) chairman Nancy Pelosi said the continuation of the impeachment trial against former President Donald Trump would not hurt Joe Biden's call for unity.
"The fact is, the president of the United States (Trump) is carrying out an act of sedition," Pelosi told reporters on Capitol Hill on Thursday, January 21, 2021 US time, as quoted by Aljazeera.
This was disclosed by Nancy Pelosi a day after Joe Biden was inaugurated as the 46th US President to replace Trump.
“I don't think it's very unifying to say, 'Oh, let's just forget about it and move on'. That's not how you come together, "said Pelosi.
He added that he was not willing to give Trump freedom from prison just because he had left office.
Earlier on January 6, 2021, Trump supporters stormed the Capitol Building during the endorsement of Joe Biden's victory in the US presidential election.
Many US legislators were angry with Trump's role in the incident and lawmakers voted to impeach the 45th US president for inciting a rebellion.
"He's gathering troops. He encouraged them to continue fighting. He sends them on their way to the Capitol. He called for breaking the law. He leads the way to the Capitol. And law violations occur, ”said Pelosi.
Nancy Pelosi did not provide a timetable for when the Senate trial could take place, although as talks continue between House and Senate leaders.
"Soon," said Pelosi.
However, some Republicans in the US Senate warned that holding a trial on the House impeachment allegations against Trump after leaving office would be divisive and counterproductive for Biden.
The second impeachment is a political exercise that "will ultimately destroy the presidency," said Republican Senator Lindsey Graham.
