Melania Trump's parents received US citizenship
Viktor and Amalija Knavs became Americans thanks to their daughter, a process fought by Donald Trump.
It's a sweet paradox. While Donald Trump does not have strong enough words against immigration and certain naturalization processes, his in-laws have just become Americans thanks to the help of their daughter.
Melania Trump's Slovenian parents were granted US citizenship on Thursday in an official ceremony, one of their lawyers, Michael Wildes, said. Viktor and Amalija Knavs, were sworn in at a naturalization ceremony in New York.
According to CNN, which quotes a source familiar with the matter, the parents of Melania Trump have been officially supported in their naturalization process. This term refers to foreigners who manage to come to the United States legally through the sponsorship of family members who immigrated before them, including siblings, or children.
The "chain migration"
A so-called "chain migration" process, which the Trump administration wants to suppress. The First Lady also supported her parents in obtaining their green card, which allows them to have permanent residence in the country. Viktor and Amalija Knavs obtained it last February.
Contacted by CNN, the First Lady's office did not respond.
Viktor Knavs, who used to be a car salesman, and Amalija Knavs, a former worker in a textile factory, are over 70 years old. In retirement, they spend most of their time in the United States with their daughter Melania and grandson Barron.
