Oprah's interview with Harry-Meghan is watched by 50 million people
The worldwide audience of Oprah Winfrey's interviews with British royals, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, reached nearly 50 million people. This number is predicted to continue to grow with a replay that is being prepared.
An estimated 49.1 million viewers in 17 countries enjoyed the broadcast. CBS said not all calculations made it because the company had licensed the interviews for broadcast in more than 80 regions.
Nielsen's company stated that Americans alone watched the interview reaching 17.8 million viewers. Meanwhile in the UK, broadcast rights owner ITV says it has 13.3 million viewers, a huge number for a smaller country.
Seeing the big welcome, CBS said the interview would be performed again on Friday (12/3) from 20.00-22.00 local time. The results of the interview which were broadcast for the first time on Sunday (7/3) and immediately became the talk of the world.
One effect that emerged was that former CNN character Piers Morgan left the program Good Morning, Britain. The move followed a furor over comments he made criticizing Meghan.
As for Oprah, who hosts the show, the interview shows that the power of talking is still very popular. CBS initially set aside 90 minutes for the broadcast but, after the interview actually took place, he changed it to two hours.
Such success is likely to have resonance for the industry. Perhaps the most noticeable thing is that Oprah is still a strong force to broadcast big shows, let alone invite big names. Previously, the model of such shows was becoming obsolete recently.
