Queen Elizabeth Responds to Meghan Markle's Racism Issues
Buckingham Palace called the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's remarks in an interview with Oprah Winfrey "worrying". The royal family will handle this matter personally.
After reports of alleged racism by the British monarchy surfaced, Buckingham Palace announced on Tuesday that royal officials would take matters facing the Duke and Duchess of Sussex "very seriously" and would resolve them privately.
The announcement came after a video interview of Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex by Oprah Winfrey, aired on Sunday (07/03).
In a statement "issued on the queen's behalf", the palace announced that the royal family was "saddened to learn full well how hard Harry and Meghan have been through the last few years."
The palace said statements made by the Duke and Duchess in interviews about having a family member utter racial slurs would be "taken very seriously."
Meghan reports on racism issues
Meghan told Winfrey that Harry had been questioned by an unnamed family member about the possibility of "how dark" their son's skin was. Public pressure on Buckingham Palace increased shortly after Meghan raised the issue of racism.
But according to the Palace, Sussex, who married in 2018, "will always be a beloved member of the family." The statement from Buckingham Palace comes after serious talks between senior royals.
An interview that was witnessed by millions of people
The interview was viewed by 12.4 million viewers in the UK and 17.1 million in the United States, sparking a global reaction.
Harry and Meghan, who currently live in California, spoke with Winfrey about racism, mental health, the treatment of the British media and other members of the royal family.
Meghan said she `` didn't want to live anymore '' amidst her attempts to fit into the royal family, but was met with resistance when she asked for help.
The British emcee resigned
Harry and Meghan's interview stirred up differences of opinion among the British public. Some believe and judge how intolerant the royal institution is. Others did not believe it and argued that the interview was an inappropriate attack on Queen Elizabeth and her family.
British television presenter Piers Morgan said he "didn't believe a word." That response sparked the ire of viewers and even fellow presenters. Her comments about the Duchess of Sussex, made on the television program Good Morning Britain, drew 40,000 complaints to communications regulators, Ofcom and mental health charities.
