Record drop in popularity for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle

Since their interview with Oprah Winfrey, the Sussexes have fallen out of favor with the British, as shown by a YouGov poll, published this Friday, March 12. A blow especially for Prince Harry who identifies for the first time more negative than positive opinions.

While the Sussexes have benefited from the support of a multitude of American personalities in recent days, from Hillary Clinton to Beyoncé, it is clear that their appearance on television greatly displeases the United Kingdom. Across the Channel, Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle are reaching unpopularity records, reports a survey by the Yougov Institute of 1,664 adults, published this Friday, March 12.

Prince Harry pinned

This is hardly surprising news since since the "Megxit", the Sussexes were already among the least popular members of the royal family. However, where the shoe pinches is the image of Prince Harry. For the first time in the history of the English monarchy, more Britons have a negative (48%) than a positive (45%) opinion of the 36-year-old. His wife, meanwhile, flirts with unpopularity over and over again. Only 31% of those polled have a positive opinion of the former Suits actress, while a majority (58%) view her negatively.

Elizabeth II still more popular

On the side of the rest of the royal family, most can hold their heads up high. Despite accusations of racism or lack of support from the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, their reputation does not appear to have been tainted. Queen Elizabeth II continues to be the top favorite royal figure, with an 80% approval rating. Prince William, Harry's brother and second in line of succession, as well as his wife Kate also remain very popular, with around three quarters of favorable opinions.

Only Prince Charles, heir to the throne of England, however, saw his popularity suffer from the aftermath of the CBS interview. Harry and William's father collected a 6 point increase in negative opinions against him (to 42%), and at the same time, suffered a 9 point drop in favorable opinions (to 49%).
