Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt don't get along. This is why.
Celebrities are paid to cause drama on screen, but occasionally that tension extends to professional employment relationships as well. From creative differences to conflicting personalities, there is no shortage of reasons why some A-listers just don't get along, sometimes to the surprise of their co-stars and the general public! For example, Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise seem like they should get along - after all, they are both successful and attractive actors who have proven their longevity in an industry known for burning talent. But beyond these basic commonalities, the couple couldn't disagree with each other more.
Part of the rivalry stems from the competitive nature of Cruise and Pitt. "Tom was the biggest name on the A-list of the 80s and Brad was the 90s," said an industry source. The National Enquirer in 2019. Still, the pair's feud - which Radar Online reports has been ongoing for at least 25 years - runs deeper than friendly competition between fellow stars. So how did the Cruise and Pitt fight start, and what is it about?
Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt collided while filming Interview with the Vampire
On top of the success of his 1991 breakout role Thelma and Louise, Brad Pitt landed a lead role in the 1994 horror film Interview with the Vampire alongside megastar Tom Cruise. But from their first interaction, the two did not see eye to eye. Although he played a haunting vampire in the film, Pitt took the film's maudlin mood to a whole new level, admitting to being "miserable" on set (according to Entertainment Weekly). And working with Cruise certainly didn't help at all!
"It bothered me," Pitt complained in an interview via TuTango. “There came a point during filming where I started to really resent him. He's from the North Pole, I'm from the South, ”Pitt continued, illustrating the differences between the two men. He always comes to you with a handshake, while I can bump into you. There was an underlying competition that got in the way of any real conversation.
Even after filming ended, Pitt and Cruise never fixed their differences. In 2009, the actors vied for top box office success with their respective World War II dramas: Pitt starred in Inglorious Bastards and cruise ship in Valkyrie - and Pitt’s ended up winning. However, he was not courteous in his victory and called his rival's failure "a ridiculous movie", although his agent later recorded that he discredited the quote as "inaccurate."
Angelina Jolie could have been part of the fight
The hostility between Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise heated up even more when Pitt's ex-wife Angelina Jolie got involved. In 2010, Cruise was set for the lead role as a CIA agent-turned-spy on Sal, when Jolie pounced in to call dibs. "Well, Tom Cruise never signed, but he was really thinking about it." Sal director Phillip Noyce clarified to ME! News. “We needed a start date, so we needed an actor. Amy Pascal, director of Sony Pictures, said, 'We sent it to Angelina.' It's unclear if Pitt had anything to do with the change (since he was married to Jolie at the time), but at least, we imagine he enjoyed watching the drama go by.
After things turned sour between Pitt and Jolie following their divorce in 2017, Gossip Police (via Celebuzz) reported that she and Cruise were having "secret romantic meetings." The couple reportedly hit it off after meeting to discuss a possible film project. Unsurprisingly, an anonymous source said Pitt was unhappy with the news and that Jolie was enjoying the fact that her new romance was upsetting her ex (via TuTango). Perhaps she was hoping to rub a little "salt" on the wound? As juicy as the rumors were, they were later proven to be false. Whatever the true state of affairs between Cruise and Pitt, it is clear that there is no love lost between them.
