Will Donald Trump run for president again in 2024?
President Donald Trump could potentially pursue a future election under the US Constitution.
President Donald Trump has failed to win his re-election bid against Democratic challenger Joe Biden, but it may not be the final end of his time in power.
By Saturday, Biden had won the key state of Pennsylvania, propelling the Democrat to the White House by awarding him the necessary 270 electoral college votes.
However, under the United States Constitution, even if Trump loses the election, he could still run for the Oval Office again in 2024.
The 22nd Amendment states that: "No one may be elected to the office of President more than twice."
However, that requirement does not establish a time frame for when those two terms must be held.
Speaking to the Today show on Thursday, former Trump adviser Bryan Lanza said he believed the president would be in a "good position" to run again in four years.
"Everybody thought this was going to be a spectacular choice," Lanza said. "We were talking about a double digit lead, we were talking about an Electoral College landslide and we are far from that."
“If I'm advising the president and we have conversations every once in a while, I'd say, 'Sir, you're in a good position right now, if you fall short, to run again in four years,'” he continued.
However, he said, if Trump wants to run, it is important that he be careful in "exiting" him to ensure that he does not "damage a potential career four years from now."
Lanza is not the first former Trump adviser to suggest that Trump could run again in 2024, and Steve Bannon made similar comments last month.
Even if the president failed to win a second term, Bannon said, "You will not see the end of Donald Trump."
Senator Lindsey Graham also encouraged Trump to run again to "keep his movement alive."
Two of Trump's former aides, Rick Gaetz and Mick Mulvaney, said they would not be surprised to see Trump on the 2024 ballot.
Even Trump is considering a career, according to anonymous sources speaking to Axios. Trump has not publicly commented on the possibility of a race in 2024.
If Trump tries to run again, he would not be the first president of the United States to do so, as President Grover Cleveland made a successful second election bid in 1892.
Cleveland became the 22nd president of the United States in 1884, but was defeated in his reelection bid against his Republican rival Benjamin Harrison.
In 1892, Cleveland returned and also became the twenty-fourth president.
