Donald Trump is banned from Facebook, confirmed
Facebook's supervisory board has looked into the ban on Donald Trump and today announced its verdict: the former US president will not recover his account suspended since last January. At least not for now.
On January 6, 2021, supporters of Donald Trump stormed the Washington Capitol. In the process, the American president then still in office is banned from social networks, Twitter and Facebook in mind. Now, it's Facebook's supervisory board that is looking into his case.
His verdict was eagerly awaited, since this council must decide the most delicate questions of moderation, and that concerning Donald Trump is. Ultimately, he won’t recover either his Instagram account or his Facebook account, of 24 million and 35 million subscribers respectively. The indefinite suspension of Facebook is therefore legal, but the board is not really happy with the current situation. It thus gives six months to the network to find a solution, that is to say to apply a more measured sanction.
FACEBOOK BANNED TRUMP TOO QUICKLY, ACCORDING TO THE ADVICE
The board also gave its opinion on the suspension and concluded that it was not for Facebook to make this delicate decision. This story has raised a lot of questions about moderation. Is it the role of a private company to decide who has the right to speak or not? Should we let someone knowingly break the rules of a network because he is a man of power? Legitimate questions. Everyone has their own opinion.
The riots on Capitol Hill came as a shock to America, and many platforms took the decision to ban the former president. It was Twitter that led the way by suspending Donald Trump's account for 24 hours on January 6. The following day he tweeted again, which convinced the social network to ban him permanently. Facebook and the others followed.
It remains to be seen what will become of Donald Trump's Facebook account, which is still accessible. We will find out in a maximum of six months. At the same time, the former president returned to the Internet via DonalJTrump.com. Described as a social network, it actually doesn't allow any interaction, more blogging than anything else.
