Melania Trump celebrated Mother’s Day with Barron while Donald Trump went golfing

President Donald Trump wished Melania Trump, his First Lady and the mother of his 11-year-old son, a “wonderful” Mother’s Day.

He did so, in typical Donald Trump fashion, via Twitter.

Then he went golfing, hitting his own Loudon County Trump National Golf Club in Washington, D.C. This outing marked his 21st to a golf course since being sworn in as president and followed his abrupt and controversial firing of FBI director James Comey and the ensuing fall-out, Vanity Fair reported.

And where was Melania? She was “spending the day with her family,” a family spokesman told the Washington Examiner.

For her celebratory Mother’s Day tweet, the president was absent.

The rather playful mother/son image she posted showed her and Barron in matching tuxedo suits, with Barron snapping a photo of her as they sat together on a sofa in some room with lots of heavy-duty gilding on the walls and furnishings. Could that room be in Trump Tower or in Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach?

Of course, it’s not all that unusual for a woman’s Mother’s Day social media post to focus just on her kids and not include her partner.

But Melania and Donald Trump are not a “usual” couple by any measure, so there’s going to be a lot read into the fact that Trump went golfing on Mother’s Day while Melania “spent the day with family.”

The Washington Examiner made it sound as though Melania wasn’t with the president on Sunday, and it was quick to explain what has been long reported: that Melania currently doesn’t live in the White House with her husband but has been dividing her time between Trump Tower in New York City and Washington DC.

The portrait that’s emerged of their marriage in Vanity Fair, the Washington Post and other publications is that she’s a beleaguered wife who has long endured various humiliations at the hands of a self-centered husband, accused by multiple women during his presidential campaign of sexual harassment or sexual assault. Trump has denied the allegations.

These publications suggest that Melania has long put up with this behavior in exchange for being a billionaire’s wife who gets to live in Trump Tower while devoting herself to raising Barron. They all say that Melania didn’t really want to be First Lady and that’s the reason she’s been slow to take up her responsibilities of being First Lady.

But the White House has insisted that Melania only stayed in New York so that Barron could finish up his academic year at his current school. The White House has said that Melania and Barron will be moving to the White House this summer.

The president recently told Bloomberg News that Barron had been admitted to a “good school in Washington.” The Daily Mail added that Barron will be attending the prestigious St. Andrew’s Episcopal School in suburban Maryland.

With Trump saying that the school issue is settled, it would seem that Melania and Barron’s move to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue is finally a done deal.

And if the president and First Lady went their separate ways on Mother’s Day, they appeared together Friday, smiling and even exchanging a kiss, at the White House for a Mother’s Day celebration for military spouses.

At that event, Melania offered up prepared remarks about her own experience of being a mother, an experience that is clearly central to who she is, the Washington Post reported.

“As everyone in this room knows, mother is a title that claims your heart and changes your life forever,” she said. “In fact, it has been said that having a child means allowing your heart to walk around outside of your body. For the mothers of someone who has or is serving our country, this must be especially true.”
