TOM CRUISE RETURNS THE THREE GOLDEN GLOBES THAT HE WON IN PROTEST FOR THE LACK OF DIVERSITY OF THESE AWARDS
The actor starts a chain reaction of rejection of these awards in Hollywood, which next year will not be broadcast on television until their rules change.
Hollywood is in deep crisis. Or rather, his award system, which beyond feeding the ego of the award-winning stars, encourages the public to go to the theaters to see the titles that triumph each year in their various galas. Something that translates into a considerable increase in box office collections. In short: make more money, this is still a business.
The problem is that in recent years that halo of glamor and desire that the awards galas had has been lost. And we are not talking about the hearings, which have also plummeted; but of the increasingly louder voices that accuse the organizations in charge of electing the winners of not being sufficiently representative and plural. A lack of racial and sexual diversity among its members that of course was later reflected in the list of winners.
Especially among the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, in charge of organizing the Golden Globes and which, as an investigation published in the LA Times revealed a few days ago, does not have any African-American person among its ranks. And that is 90 people from 55 countries who vote each year for these awards.
Something that, added to other criticisms related to certain inappropriate behaviors of racism and machismo, has caused Hollywood to agree to stop supporting these awards until profound changes are made to correct these historical errors. Something that the HFPA has promised to do in the next 18 months.
But that has not prevented the first big boycott of the Globes from being announced this morning: the NBC network, which has broadcast the gala since 1996, confirmed in a press release that they joined this boycott and that it will not broadcast the year that the gala is coming. A decision that has been supported and applauded by the executives of platforms such as Netflix or Amazon and studios such as Warner Media.
Although they have not been the ones who have given the final touch to the Globes, but the actor Tom Cruise, who in protest last night decided to return in a box the three awards he has won throughout his career for Born on 4 July (1990), Jerry Maguire (1997) and Magnolia (2000). Something that has surely left the HFPA shaking, which knows that without stars sitting in their finery ready to drink champagne while listening to terrible jokes, they will run out of business.
Come on, they can already hurry to solve their lack of diversity because the bleeding has only begun. In fact, in the last hours recently awarded stars such as Scarlett Johansson or Mark Ruffallo have also spoken badly of these awards. Are we facing the end of an age?
