The differences between Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle’s Royal Weddings
Although both royal weddings attracted millions of viewers across the world, Prince William and Kate Middleton’s wedding on April 29, 2011, and Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding on May 19, 2018 were different in many ways. From the dresses to the tiaras and beauty looks, here are the differences and similarities between the two royal weddings.
The wedding dress
Kate Middleton’s dress, which was designed by Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen, focused on elegance and femininity. The British design, Caudry lace and satin details flattered the young bride, whose tulle petticoat featured the symbols of the four nations of the United Kingdom. Meghan Markle surprised the world by choosing Clare Waight Keller, artistic director of Givenchy, to design her dress. The minimalist creation in silk cady with a boat neckline and floating triple organza skirt was clean, classic and elegant.
The make-up
Although both brides opted for light make up, both had flawless complexions. Kate Middleton did her own makeup: rosy cheeks, a nude lip and a slightly smoky eye. Meghan Markle, however (despite announcing that she would also handle her own makeup duties,) turned to her friend Daniel Martin: kohl eyeliner, a nude pink lip and her own freckles showing through.
Hairstyle
Meghan Markle opted for an Audrey Hepburn-inspired bun created by hairstylist Serge Normant, whereas Kate Middleton wore her hair in a half up-half down style with long loose waves, styled by James Pryce. Different, but equally royal.
The tiara
For her wedding to Prince William in April 2011, Kate Middleton borrowed the Cartier Halo Scroll Tiara, which is platinum and set with diamonds dating back to 1936, from Queen Elizabeth II. Meghan Markle opted for a tiara set with a brooch and diamonds, belonging to Queen Mary in 1932.
Rings
Following tradition, the two brides received gold engagement rings from Wales. Along with their engagement rings, Kate Middleton wore a ring 18 carat sapphire and 14 carat diamond ring belonging to Lady Diana, and Meghan Markle wore a ring designed by Prince Harry using a diamond from Botswana and two diamonds from Lady Diana’s collection, on a gold band.
The bouquet
In homage to Princess Diana, Meghan Markle’s wedding bouquet included forget-me-nots (Princess Diana’s favorite flower), sweet peas, lilies, jasmine, astrantia and myrtle, some of which were picked by Prince Harry himself. Kate Middleton’s bouquet also included myrtle and lilies, as well as hyacinth and sweet williams. Following royal tradition, both bouquets were left at the Grave of the Unknown Soldier after the ceremony.
Evening dress
After choosing a French house for her ceremony dress, Meghan Markle went for a British designer for her evening gown. Stella McCartney designed a minimalist backless gown in ivory silk crepe, much more minimal that the dress that Kate Middleton opted for in 2011. She went for a Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen creation again, in ivory silk, belted in at the waist with jewels and paired with a wool cardigan.
