The fall of Piers Morgan, the journalist who was obsessed with Meghan Markle

In recent years, the star host of ITV has been increasing criticism of Meghan Markle. An animosity which can also be explained by personal disputes.

"Embarrassing", in search of attention, worthy of "Vladimir Poutine and Kim Jong-un" ... On March 1, Piers Morgan, presenter of the program Good Morning Britain, spared no quality in Meghan Markle and the prince harry. Following Lady Di's youngest son interview with James Corden, the polemicist sharply criticized the couple and their overexposure. While he's not the only personality or media entity to stand up against the duo as they approach their exclusive interview with Oprah Winfrey, he is arguably their fiercest public critic. A hatred that has its roots in a personal matter, and even earned him, after yet another rant, to be pushed towards the exit door on March 11.

A vehement presenter

It was in the print media that Piers Morgan took his first steps, climbing the ranks in the tabloids. Between 1994 and 1995, he was the head of News of The World, and was even later involved in the wiretapping scandal perpetrated by the newspaper against public figures. From 1995, he joined the management of the Daily Star until 2004, then continued on the small screen. After three years presenting Piers Morgan Tonight on CNN, in 2015 he became one of the faces of Good Morning Britain, ITV's morning show.

The 55-year-old, a staunch supporter of Donald Trump until April 2020, is known for his vehement outings, notably in his column in the Daily Mail. Among his recurring targets are many women, Jameela Jamil, actress of the comedy The Good Place or the model Emily Ratajkowski whose naked photos he mocked, until recently. But few figures he loathes as much as Meghan Markle, who he says is responsible for splits in the royal family.

After accusing the couple of being "disgusting" and "narcissistic," he recently came to grips with their decision to grant an exclusive interview to Oprah Winfrey.

The Duchess in the crosshairs

The chronicler's criticisms are almost personal revenge. "If Meghan you did what she did to me, you would also be seriously pissed off," he told the Irish Times in October 2020. The two were once close: “I literally put him in a cab after a two hour discussion. Once inside, she went to a dinner party where Harry was; the next day she was having a tête-à-tête at Soho House with him, and I never heard from her again. I found it very superficial, and the pushy side is appalling. " The journalist is not one of the guests at the royal wedding on May 19, 2018, which included an audience of celebrities ranging from George Clooney to the Suits team. In May 2020, however, he admitted to the Sunday Times that he had crossed the line: “This is a very fair criticism. Will this influence the way I talk about them in the future? Absolutely. It’s not wise, if you’re a columnist, to take things too personally ”. Mea-culpa he will soon forget: a year later, the host is more motivated than ever to shoot the Duchess of Sussex, which has caused her downfall. The ITV channel has indeed ended up pushing him to resign following the comments he made after the interview with Meghan Markle and Prince Harry. Criticism too much? To have questioned the statement of the ex-actress on her suicidal thoughts.
