15 celebrities and the scandals that ended their professional careers
Entering the artistic world is very difficult, and staying on top much more. Especially when a simple unfortunate decision can not only end a brilliant career, but send the artist into the deepest oblivion ...
Show business doesn't usually give second chances. When an actor makes a bad decision, it can become the beginning of the end, the decline of his profession. In Hollywood, there are several examples of influential figures who have starred in scandals that end up erasing them from the fray.
Police arrests, drug problems, harassment ... Not everyone can recover from the negative impact that these types of accusations, true or false, can have on their careers. Next, we make a count of actors who ruined their artistic future from one day to the next.
1. Randy Quaid
American Randy Quaid has played many characters throughout his career. He is remembered for his role as Russell Casse, a Vietnam veteran who helped save the world from aliens in the famous production Independence Day.
He won a Golden Globe for best actor in a miniseries in 1988 for LBJ: The Early Years. And earlier, in 1974, he had been nominated for an Oscar and BAFTA for best supporting actor for his performance as Larry Meadows in the movie The Last Detail, in which he worked alongside Jack Nicholson.
But his luck changed after facing problems with the law. And, in 2009, he and his wife were arrested after refusing to pay a hotel bill in the amount of $ 10,000.
In 2010 they illegally occupied a private residence and ended up escaping to Canada. They excused themselves by telling the press that they were fleeing the Hollywood Star Wackers, a supposed secret organization that is responsible for eliminating celebrities or spreading rumors to discredit them. In a statement he offered in 2010, Quaid said:
"I have had eight friends who have died mysteriously or have had scandals in recent years."
Authorities did not believe his conspiracy theory and arrested the couple again, but they were released in 2015.
Randy has not appeared on the screens for some years, but he was heard from in February 2017, when he posted on Twitter a strange video with his wife with the message: “I'm ba-aack” (I'm from he came back).
2. Jennifer Gray
Jennifer Gray made her film debut in 1984, and in 1986 she appeared in the film Ferris Bueller's Day Off. But it wasn't until she played the role of Frances “Baby” Houseman in Dirty Dancing alongside Patrick Swayze, a movie classic, that she became one of the favorite actresses of the '80s.
Although she was not involved in any kind of scandal, a marked physical change and a terrible car accident took her away from the screens.
The decision to have a rhinoplasty completely changed her face, and she cost him many roles. She herself came to assure that no one recognized her in her castings.
In an interview with US Magazine she commented:
"I will always be this actress who was once famous and nobody recognizes for a nose job."
At 25 she had a tragic accident while on vacation in Ireland with her boyfriend, Matthew Broderick. The occupants of the car they collided with, a woman and her daughter, were killed on the spot.
All of this affected her not only physically, but emotionally. And she ended up walking away from screens at age 29.
3. Wesley Snipes
Wesley Trent Snipes starred in several of the action films of the 90s, including the Blade trilogy. And he even appreciated in the Bad video of the king of pop, Michael Jackson.
He was doing very well, but suddenly he made up his mind not to pay any more taxes. It wasn't that bad, was it? After all, he could return the money at some point. But the judge did not consider it that way, and sentenced him to three years in prison for intentionally failing to file his tax return.
He had to pay more than 17 million back taxes, but what cost him the most was his artistic career, which was interrupted.
4. Rip Torn
American Rip Torn has many films to his credit, from Cross Creek, which earned him an Oscar nomination for best supporting actor in 1983, to the popular Man In Black.
In 1967 he had an incident with director Dennis Hopper. The two were having dinner at a restaurant with actor Peter Fonda and writer Terry Southern to discuss a role in the new movie Easy Rider, which ended up going to Jack Nicholson.
The issue became complicated when rumors and accusations began to spread that Torn pulled a knife from Hopper. In 1994, almost 30 years later, Torn sued Hopper and denied his version, claiming that he was the one who had the knife.
The jury found in favor of the actor and Hopper ended up paying him $ 475,000 in damages, since a false image of Rip had been spread that left him as a violent man or unstable in the face of public opinion.
5. Paz de la Huerta
MarÃa de la Paz Elizabeth SofÃa Adriana de la Huerta y Bruce is an American actress and model with Spanish parents who rose to popularity for her portrayal of Lucy Danzinger on the HBO series Boardwalk Empire.
Her fame as a party girl was taking her career in decline. Celebrity news network TMZ posted pictures of her drunk after the Golden Globes.
She even threw a glass at model Samantha Swetra at a party and hit her, for which she was arrested in 2011.
And on the set things were worse, as her classmates indicated that she liked to shave publicly and she came to work drunk and drugged. In 2013 she was fired from her and recently, in 2017, she accused producer Harvey Weinstein of rape.
6. Michael Richards
American Michael Richards did very well acting as Kramer in Seinfield, the Emmy-winning series, but in 2006 he made a decision that completely muddied his career.
He was participating in a stand-up comedy and suddenly started arguing with one of the audience members.
It was not the debate with the man himself, but the series of racial slurs that cost Richards national repudiation. He was demanding that the man be kicked out of the club, and the incident quickly went viral.
He later appeared on The Late Show With David Letterman apologizing for the whole thing:
"I lost my temper on stage (...) I said some pretty nasty things to some African-Americans ... You know, I'm really taken aback by this and I'm so sorry, I'm so sorry."
7. Mel Gibson
This Hollywood star, winner of two Oscars for Best Director and Best Picture in 1995 for Braveheart (Brave Heart), threw his career overboard in July 2006 when he was arrested for speeding under the influence of alcohol, for which was sentenced to three years of probation.
He was also accused of gender-based violence by his girlfriend, Oksana Grigorieva. In 2010 the Russian pianist blamed him for hitting her while she was holding her daughter in her arms. Both faced a legal battle that culminated in 2011, as reported by Hola! Magazine, with a conditional release agreement that included psychological counseling to control anger attacks and a fine of 420 euros.
But his bad reputation does not end there, since he was also branded as anti-Semitic and homophobic. However, he has tried to shine again in Hollywood and it has not fared too badly, as his film Blood Father was well received by critics and Hacksaw Ridge, the biographical drama he directed, received a standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival.
8. Tila Tequila
ila Nguyen, known in the art world as “Tila Tequila,” is a model, singer, and reality show star who became known for becoming the most popular person on the MySpace social network. After that, MTV offered her own show: A Shot at Love with Tila Tequila.
Everything was going well in her career until in 2013 she decided to publish an article entitled Why I sympathize with Hitler and pictures of her on her Facebook page in which she poses scantily clad in front of a photo of a field of concentration. After the constant complaints, her profile ended up being deleted.
In 2015, she tried to resume her career by participating in the show Celebrity Big Brother, but her complaints caused the producers to ask her to leave the series. She apologized for the anti-Semitic comments and attributed them to drug and alcohol problems.
In 2016 she released a controversial tweet in which she claimed that Jewish-American writer Ben Shapiro had to be "gassed and sent back to Israel."
"There are only two things in this world for which I would gladly sacrifice my own life, the destruction of all Jews and the preservation of the white race," he wrote.
And that same year he attended a meeting of the far-right National Policy Institute to celebrate Trump's victory. At that time he posted a photo on Twitter where he replicated the Nazi salute with the text: "Seig heil!" His account was immediately suspended.
9. Lindsay Lohan
American Lindsay Lohan proved fame at an early age with her film The Parent Trap. After that she continued with Disney and filmed Freaky Friday (A Crazy Friday) and others like Mean Girls (Bad Girls) and Herbie.
But her addiction to drugs took her to dark corners from which she, apparently, she has not been able to recover.
In January 2007 she was admitted to the Wonderland Center, a Florida rehabilitation center. And in May of that same year, she was arrested after suffering a car accident in Beverly Hills while she was driving while intoxicated, in addition to being in possession of cocaine. Three days later she was admitted again, but at the Promises center in Malibu.
Again in July she was arrested for the same crimes. At her appearance before a judge, she pleaded guilty to two of the seven she was charged with and she was sentenced to probation, an alcoholic rehabilitation program, community service and a day in jail.
Lohan has been in and out of rehab many times and her scandals, reported chronologically by CNN, have had a severe impact on her career.
This 2018 she gave something to talk about again when she persecuted a family of Syrian refugees in Moscow, Russia, to take the children, thinking they were being kidnapped. In 1991 he was arrested for exhibitionism, after being found touching himself in an adult movie theater. He withdrew from the public eye during the 1990s and his return was marred when he was accused of possessing child pornography. The actor has denied all these allegations, but his reputation declined.
Although in 2016 he starred in Pee-wee's Big Holiday, which premiered on the Netflix platform, and had a positive response.
11. Rob Lowe
Robert Hepler Lowe was the heartthrob of the 80s. After his participation in the movie Rebels, his popularity was on the rise.
However, everything changed in 1988, when he attended a Democratic National Convention in Atlanta. There he met some girls in a nightclub and had relationships with them, not knowing that they were 16 years old. He did not go to prison because in Georgia the legal age to obtain consent is precisely 16.
And the thing was worse when the video leaked. Lowe unwittingly pioneered sex videos, which were copied and sold to the general public. Later, other material was disseminated where he and a friend had relationships with the same woman.
Although his career was not entirely extinguished, Lowe admitted that he has lost good roles, including one in Titanic, for those episodes in his life.
12. Brendan Fraser
The Brendan Fraser papers were well received. The film George of the Jungle (1997) and The Mummy (1999) brought him to instant fame, but he suddenly disappeared from the public spotlight in the mid-2000s.
The reason? His career was consolidated with the action and adventure film Journey to the Center of the Earth, reaching a total of 242 million dollars. But his decision to reject the sequel caused him to lose, in addition to money, greater moments of fame. Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, surpassed the original and grossed $ 335 million.
In an interview with GQ magazine offered in 2018, he said that he had to go through the mourning of his mother and several surgeries due to stunts for his action roles.
“I moved houses, I went through a divorce. Some children were born, ”he added.
On the other hand, he related that he was the victim of a sexual assault in the summer of 2003 by Philip Berk, former president of the HFPA (Hollywood Foreign Press Association), who denied such accusations. However, the HFPA reported that Berk will be investigated to determine whether there was abuse of power, said La Estrella de Panamá.
He is currently working in a new role on the FX series Condor.
13. Jeffrey Jones
Jeffrey Duncan Jones rose to fame in the 1980s, appearing in prominent productions such as Bueller’s Day Off and the insufferable Beetlejuice. He was even nominated for a Golden Globe for best supporting actor for the movie Amadeus.
Everything seemed to be going well, but in 2002 his career took a nosedive. That year he was arrested for possession of child pornography and allegedly hiring a 14-year-old boy to take inappropriate photos of him. He did not plead guilty and although he was not sent to prison, he ended up serving 5 years of probation and was required to register as a sex offender.
In 2010 he was sentenced again to 250 hours of community service for failing to update his record, which must be done annually.
14. Mark Salling
We all knew Mark Wayne Salling from his incarnation of "Puck" on the youth series Glee. But his fame did not last long since in 2015 he was arrested, also for possession of a child's photograph, although he was released on bail.
Authorities said in a statement that they found a laptop, hard drive and USB drive filled with images and videos of child pornography. Lt. Andrea Grossman specified at the time that:
"No matter who you are or what you do, if you hurt a child, you will be held responsible."
And although she reached an agreement with the prosecution, he ended up hanging himself in a canyon near Los Angeles before sentencing. He was found dead on January 30, 2018.
15. Amanda Bynes
Everything about Amanda Bynes looked good in its early days. In 1999 she had her own show on Nickelodeon, called The Amanda Show, and she participated in several movies and series, such as What I Like About You. But her problems with drugs and alcohol were bringing her career to an end.
In 2010 she announced on Twitter that she was leaving the acting world:
“I know that 24 years is a tender age to retire, but they have the scoop, I have retired. Being an actress is not as fun as it sounds, if I no longer love something, I stop doing it. I no longer love acting, that's why I stopped doing it ”.
That was not the only controversial tweet from her, many others, compiled by E News, gave a lot to talk about. In 2013 she was arrested for reckless driving, tampering with evidence, and possession of marijuana. Her erratic behavior after causing a small fire in the house of the neighbors of her parents caused her to be confined in a psychiatric hospital.
In 2017 she said that she was ready to shine again. It hasn't happened yet, but many of her fans are waiting for her.
