Britney Spears married in Las Vegas and tries to annul her wedding

Britney Spears married a childhood friend from Louisiana in Las Vegas, but she immediately agreed to annul the marriage, a source close to the singer told the AP on Sunday.

George Maloof Jr., owner of the Palms Hotel Casino, confirmed that the 22-year-old pop diva married Jason Allen Alexander at 5:30 a.m. Saturday in a Las Vegas chapel.

"Nobody expected it," said Maloof, a good friend of Spears.

A source who she asked not to be named told The Associated Press that Spears was a little stunned by her marriage to Alexander, but she was not drunk at the time.

He said the two agreed to annul the marriage on Saturday afternoon, in the presence of several people, including a Las Vegas attorney.

"The annulment petition, which has already been signed, will be presented on Monday morning," the source said.

Calls to representatives for Spears had not been returned until now.

Spears and Alexander were married after a limo ride to the Little White Chapel on the main avenue of Las Vegas, and previously passed by the Ghostbar, a nightclub at the Hotel Casino Palms.

Chapel staff told the couple they couldn't get married without a license, so they were transferred to the Clark County Marriage Office in downtown.

After applying for and obtaining the license, they headed back to the chapel where they were married.

The bride was sporting a baseball cap and jeans, and she was escorted by a limousine driver from the Palms Hotel, the source said.

Maloof denied rumors that Spears was intoxicated and that she had to be carried outside the Rain nightclub at the Palms Hotel on New Year's Eve.

"I was with her all night," he stated. "None of those versions are true. She was just having fun."

Spears was still staying at that hotel on Sunday morning.

The singer released her fourth album, In the Zone, in November, which debuted at the top of the charts. He is scheduled to begin with a concert tour on March 2, in San Diego.
