Keeping Up With The Kardashians star Kim Kardashian has grown a lot in Instagram followers over the years, but she was still surpassed by her youngest sister Kylie Jenner in recent years. When E! first came out with the KUWTK series, it was largely acknowledged as a media vehicle for Kim Kardashian to capitalize on the backlash that she received from a leaked intimate video with rapper Ray J. For many years, Kim was indeed the most popular family member of the Kardashian-Jenner clan, even more than her Olympic medalist step-parent Caitlyn Jenner.

Kim Kardashian's Instagram success can be traced all the way back to 2014, when the concept of a social media influencer was just gaining some serious steam. At the end of 2014, Kim had earned herself a total of 22 million followers. The KUWTK star grew to 44 million in 2015, then 87 million in 2016. It was in 2016 that Kim started to feel some real competiton coming from Kylie Jenner, who was becoming increasingly popular on Instagram with a younger demographic than Kim's. In 2017, Kim officially surpassed the 100-million mark, ending the year with 105 million followers in total.

With news about her marriage to Kanye West, pregnancy updates, new endorsement deals, and the launch of her own companies, Kim Kardashian kept growing on Instagram in 2018, reaching a whopping 123 million followers that year. At that point, however, it was clear that Kim was slowly losing the numbers battle against Kylie Jenner, who was surely poised to crash her older sister's years-long reign very soon. As expected, Kim ended 2019 with 154 million followers, which, at the time, was just one million followers more than Kylie had. Despite growing to 190 million followers in 2020, Kim officially settled for second place behind Kylie, who crossed the 200-million mark that year. As of March 2021, Kim herself has grown to 210 million followers on Instagram.

The Instagram wars are stiff between the Keeping Up With The Kardashians stars. Kylie is currently reigning supreme, but it wouldn't be surprising if Kim found a way to reclaim her reign in the next few years.
