Lorraine Kelly rips into Princess Diana statue as it 'doesn't do her justice'

Lorraine was speaking on her self-titled ITV show on Friday about the unveiling

Lorraine Kelly has expressed her opinion over the statue of Princess Diana unveiled on Thursday.

The Duke of Cambridge and Duke of Sussex hosted the unveiling of the monument, which they commissioned, at Kensington Palace.

The statue of their late mother has been erected in the Sunken Garden at Diana's former home - one of the places Diana loved most - to mark what would have been her 60th birthday on July 1.

The figure of the princess, which aimed to reflect Diana's "warmth, elegance and energy", is surrounded by three children and depicts Diana, who died aged 36 when she was killed in car crash in 1997, in the later years of her life.

Speaking on her self-titled ITV show on Friday about the unveiling, Lorraine told royal commentator Russel Myers: "Can I just say, I don't really like it.

"I'm sorry," she said. "I don't know what you think, but I don't really like the outfit.

"What I do like is the strength, she looks very strong. I just don't think it does her justice."

He said: "Are any modern statues any good? That's the issue. It's from her later years. They wanted to represent the time she was more confident in her humanitarian work.

"Whether they have achieved that is a matter to debate."

Lorraine, 61, the mentioned the outfit, adding in response: "I don't know. I know the outfit, that was on a Christmas card wasn't it, well that's where they think it came from."

She later added: "Of course, it was all about the boys and if they're happy, then that's fine.

"Maybe it looks better in real life. I have to reserve judgement until I can see it for myself."

In a joint statement issued after the unveiling of the statue, Harry and William said: "Today, on what would have been our Mother’s 60th birthday, we remember her love, strength and character – qualities that made her a force for good around the world, changing countless lives for the better.

"Every day, we wish she were still with us, and our hope is that this statue will be seen forever as a symbol of her life and her legacy."

The message added: "Thank you to Ian Rank-Broadley, Pip Morrison and their teams for their outstanding work, to the friends and donors who helped make this happen, and to all those around the world who keep our mother’s memory alive. — Prince William and Prince Harry."
