Strong Criticism of the Statue of Princess Diana, Some Call it Ancient & Creepy
The statue of Princess Diana was unveiled at Sunken Park, Kensington Palace on Thursday (1/7) or to coincide with the late princess' 60th birthday. The statue was inaugurated by the children of the late Princess Diana, namely Prince William and Prince Harry.
The statue designed by sculptor Ian Rank-Broadley looks beautiful standing in the center of Sunken Park. In the statue, Princess Diana is seen holding the shoulders of two small children. Meanwhile, another child followed behind.
"The figure of Princess Diana, Princess of Wales, surrounded by three children who represent the universality and generational impact of her work," Kensington Palace said in a statement.
“The portraits and style of dress are based on the last period of her life, when she gained confidence in her role as ambassador for humanitarian causes. This statue aims to convey his character and compassion,” Kensington Palace added.
The name Ian Rank-Broadley itself is not a new name in art circles. He is a prominent British sculptor. Citing People, his name is best known for engraving the image of Queen Elizabeth II on all British and Commonwealth coins since 1988. In addition, he recently engraved a portrait of the late Prince Philip for a special edition coin to commemorate the life of the Duke of Edinburgh.
Strong criticism of the statue of Princess Diana

Not only netizens, several well-known figures in England also gave scathing comments to the statue of Princess Diana. One of the figures who made the comments was British documentary producer Neil Crombie. In his tweet on Twitter, he said that the statue was very scary.

In addition, scathing comments also came from the British art critic, Alastair Sookie. He called the statue very 'masculine' and too ancient.
“The visual language (i.e. classical bronze sculpture) feels very ancient, considering it was meant to be a symbol of modern femininity. Frankly, I'm not even sure her face looks like Princess Diana," Sookie said as quoted by The Telegraph UK.
