Britney Spears asks not to be under her father's tutelage anymore

The singer's lawyer said he expected James Spears to challenge the claim.

While her fans worry about her mental health, Britney Spears has just asked this Tuesday, August 18 to be released from the tutelage that her father has exercised for the past twelve years. In documents filed by her court-appointed lawyer, she asks that her father not resume this role which gave him control over the major decisions of his life from 2008 to 2019, when he temporarily retired, in due to health problems.

“Britney is strongly opposed to the return of James as guardian”, it is written in these documents viewed by the media The Blast. During the first 11 years of the guardianship, his father was co-guardian with lawyer Andrew M. Wallet, who resigned early last year, our colleagues from the US HuffPost recall.

James Spears had by then exercised sole control over the life, fortune and career of Britney Spears, which she wishes to avoid reproducing. In her request, the singer wants Jodi Montgomery, who had previously served as her temporary guardian, to do so permanently, although she indicates that she is not permanently giving up on putting an end to this trusteeship.

A guardianship that "saved" him

The documents also reveal that Britney Spears has no plans to perform in concert again, at least in the near future. Her last show dates back to October 2018. In early 2019, she had canceled her planned visit to Las Vegas. Britney Spears has hardly ever spoken publicly about this trusteeship, and the hearings and court documents in the case had until then been kept secret.

According to information obtained by TMZ and The Blast, Britney Spears would admit, however, that her father once "saved her from collapse, exploitation by predatory individuals and financial ruin" and that he allowed to “regain one's position as an artist”.

Britney Spears' attorney said he expected James Spears to challenge his daughter's claim in court, and said the star suggested they hire a specialist attorney.

The guardianship gave James Spears control not only over his daughter's career choices but also over much of her personal life, including her relationship with his teenage sons. Britney's ex-husband Kevin Federline has custody of the boys, but she visits them frequently.
