How the private lives of Jennifer Lawrence and other stars are exposed on the internet

Intimate photos of American actresses and singers were posted on the web on Sunday. A practice that is becoming more and more frequent.

The privacy of stars is increasingly difficult to preserve. American actress Jennifer Lawrence and other celebrities had a bitter experience on Sunday, August 31, when some of their intimate photos were published on the internet.

And this is not the first time that such a scandal has occurred. Regularly, stars see their private photos, where they are generally seen naked, appear on the web. Computer hacking, "revenge porn" ... How does this private information end up being made public?

Hacked iCloud accounts

The origin of the naked photos of Jennifer Lawrence and other American celebrities, broadcast Sunday, August 31 on the anonymous 4chan forum, has not yet been identified. The Mashable site, however, claims that they came from the hacking of iCloud accounts, Apple's online storage service, of several American stars.

Among the other victims identified by the site, we find the actresses Scarlett Johansson and Kirsten Dunst, or the singer Rihanna. Jennifer Lawrence quickly recognized the authenticity of the pictures, unlike other celebrities like Ariana Grande. The Hunger Games heroine agent has announced lawsuits for "gross breach of privacy," Buzzfeed reports.

Hacked mailboxes

Scarlett Johansson is not her first hack. In 2010, the star of Lucy or Under the Skin had seen several of his intimate photos posted on the internet, recalls Paris Match. Photos from actress Mila Kunis' laptop appeared on the web the same day. In total, about fifty American stars, including Jessica Alba, Tom Cruise and Miley Cyrus, were victims of the hacking of their mailbox.

The hacker responsible for the dissemination of these photos, Christopher Chaney, had accessed the personal accounts of these stars through "illegal wiretapping". The 36-year-old man, who faced up to 121 years in prison, was finally sentenced to 10 years in prison in December 2012. He was also ordered to pay 57,000 euros in reparations to Scarlett Johansson, Christina Aguilera and 'to dozens of other people whose accounts had been hacked.

The "revenge porn"

The first to disseminate intimate photographs of celebrities are sometimes their former lovers, who thus practice "revenge porn". In 2009, very daring photos of singer Rihanna made the rounds of the web. A bad publicity stunt which had then been attributed to his ex, rapper Chris Brown. The young man had formally denied, claiming that these rumors were "false and defamatory", reports MTV.

Two years earlier, the "Manaudou affair" agitated the French media. Very intimate images of the three-time Olympic swimming champion circulated on the internet in 2007, recalls France Info. His lawyer immediately had the photos removed and threatened to take legal action against those who published them. An Italian magazine had revealed a few months later that the pictures had been broadcast by the former boyfriend of Laure Manaudou, the Italian swimmer Luca Marin, according to the site of Jean-Marc Morandini.
