Princess Diana and her masculine outfits that also inspire us
Are there any trends that Diana of Wales hasn't mastered? Apparently not and these androgynous / genderless looks from her style file confirm it.
Princess Diana is an absolute style reference. The first images that come to mind when we evoke her may consist of outfits full of pastel colors, sensual dresses in combination with stilettos, or effortless outfits with mom jeans, her favorite pants.
But there are a few royal looks that we usually put aside and, in 2020 with the full rise of genderless, this is impossible. We refer to her outfits with masculine details of hers, those in which Diana of Wales broke stereotypes of femininity and, with great elegance, she demonstrated that women can wear a tuxedo or a tie.
Genderless or ‘no gender’ is a trend in current fashion, it lives a very full moment in the year in which we find ourselves. As you know, various firms have opted to dispense with labeling a garment 'for men' or 'for women' and now, the rules no longer exist. Those formulas that were pigeonholed into a single gender - such as pink for women and suits for men - no longer exist.
This would not be possible if style icons such as Princess Diana had not dared to bet on looks that, at the time, were the most risky and in a member of the demure British royalty, it is a fact that is valued even more .
That is why we decided to review the looks that Lady Di approached with and understood the genderless and androgynous concept, long before it was a trend in our times. You will surely feel inspired to give your outfits a twist after seeing them.
With tuxedo
No, it is not a vision, Princess Diana did dare to wear a tuxedo and the result was simply spectacular. She attended a charity event in this costume designed by British brand Catherine Walker, her head dressmaker. The electrifying green color of the vest to match the bow tie she paired it with lets us know that a tuxedo doesn't have to be boring, old-fashioned, or even exclusive for men.
With a tuxedo variation
As a good style prescriber, Princess Diana adapted her own standards to new looks that were also memorable. The one we mentioned earlier was a tuxedo with pants, but here, the royal adapted it to a tailored set created by the British firm Jasper Conran. It was a completely white outfit, with an oversized jacket and a skirt that Lady Di took on a visit to the city of Florence, Italy in 1985.
With tie
Princess Diana wore a tie on more than one occasion. He liked to wear them with statement garments: either an oversize coat in Classic Blue, with a tree green jacket or, as he does in this image from 1994, with a blazer with matching embroidery with the ones he wears on his navy blue tie in combination with denim jeans.
Interestingly, the tie reappeared in 2020, we saw it everywhere at Milan, New York and Paris Fashion Weeks. The street style was full of women with styles that were not far from what Princess Diana proposed during the nineties.
