Trump, after the fall of the Twin Towers on 9/11: "Now my building is the tallest in New York"

The magnate chose to comment in an interview on 9/11 that after the fall of the World Trade Center, his building at 40 Wall Street had become the tallest in the city

The claim is false, since, after the collapse of the World Trade Center, the tallest skyscraper - 7 meters higher - was number 70 Pine Street

On September 11, 2001, the United States suffered one of the largest attacks in its history. A group of terrorists hijacked two commercial airliners and crashed them into New York's two tallest skyscrapers, the Twin Towers, killing nearly 3,000 people in just a few hours.

At that time, Donald Trump was not yet president, but he was already a celebrity in Manhattan and owner of one of the most emblematic buildings in the city, the Trump Building (not to be confused with the Trump Tower, that still did not exist) located in the number 40 of the emblematic Wall Street.

As reported by the Washington Post on Tuesday, the day that marks the 17th anniversary of the tragedy, the magnate agreed to appear in an interview with a local television station, WWOR. Trump had been in Manhattan the same day the bombing took place, claiming that he had witnessed the explosion before the World Trade Center collapsed.

Throughout the interview, the current president of the United States explained, with a much more animated tone than most television presenters, that they had to do the coverage that day. "I have a window that looks directly at the World Trade Center, and I saw a huge explosion, I could hardly believe it," Trump said, apparently affected.

However, the comment he made immediately afterwards has been the focus of hundreds of criticisms on social networks this Wednesday, after several Twitter users have again brought the interview to light. When asked if his building at 40 Wall Street had suffered damage as a result of the collapse of the Twin Towers, the tycoon answered the following:

"40 Wall Street is the second tallest building in downtown Manhattan, and it was actually the tallest before the Twin Towers were built ... but of course, then when they were built it became the second tallest. high, "he explained. "But now it is the highest again," he concluded, as if it were an "epiphany", according to several users.

Beyond the fact that the now president chose to show off his property with a "totally out of place" comment on the same day as one of the worst attacks that have taken place in the United States in the last century, the claim he made is false.

According to an investigation published by the US edition of the Huffington Post in 2016, after the fall of the Twin Towers, the title of the tallest building in downtown Manhattan passed to the skyscraper at 70 Pine Street, which measures 290 meters high. The Trump-owned skyscraper at 40 Wall Street measures 283 meters.

In the interview, Trump also revealed how he would have responded to the attack if he had been president of the United States at that time, 15 years before he won the presidential election at the hands of the Democratic Party against former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

"Well, he would take a very, very, very tough stance," he assured. "I mean, most people feel like they know who the group of people is that has done this and where they are. But you have to take an even tougher stance on it. This cannot be tolerated," he argued.
