Hackers (1995): The style of the so-called "hackers" of 20 years ago
Jolie's first major movie role was in Hackers (1995), during the filming of which she met her first husband of her, British actor Jonny Lee Miller (married 1996; divorced 1999). The film failed to find an audience, as did a series of subsequent movies.
She had very short hair and had not yet risen to fame as Gia Carangi, in the film released for HBO that gave her the Golden Globe in 1999. But everyone could notice her seductive personality, the one that would one day help her become a famous movie actress. Angelina Jolie was 20 years old when she starred in the film "Hackers" (1995) and here we remember the style of Kate, her character, along with the rest of the cast that helped define the enigmatic figure of the late 20th century hacker.
She is not so feminine, never the same as others. With the help of neoprene tops, Suzuki motorcycle jackets, leather pants, and other clothing, Jolie built an unfriendly character who is slowly captivated by a new schoolmate named Dade, played by Jonny Lee Miller. The English actor, who a year later would be known forever as Sick Boy thanks to "Trainspotting" (1996), here appears as a modern teenage hunk with oxygenated hair, leather jackets with printed codes and a lot of cyberpunk.
The cast is completed by the rest of the hacker gang, where we have Cereal and his post-punk cult of The Clash and the rave; Joey, the youngest rookie in the group; Nikon, of patterned pants and clothes that are worn to surf; and Phreak, the most androgynous character of the group.
In "Hackers" the story showed the classic duality between good and evil with cybernetic fights included. But the good guys were skating to their destination, hung up on public telephones, were recognized for attack events included in the FBI record, and also had their own places and friends according to their avant-garde lifestyle. In this film, Marc Anthony appears curiously as one of the agents who persecute the hackers, while here began Jolie's first love story in the cinema: she married Jonny Lee Miller in 1996 after filming this film. Despite that, the couple divorced 18 months later, being friends to this day.
