The romantic scene that made Kate Winslet proudest was with Saoirse Ronan, not DiCaprio

While it's early to talk about the upcoming awards season when we haven't had movie premieres for nearly five months, Ammonite is one of the titles that sounds among the early predictions. A drama written and directed by Francis Lee about the relationship between a paleontologist and a depressed young woman in England in the 1840s. Kate Winslet plays the renowned but little-recognized fossil hunter Mary Anning, while Saoirse Ronan is a wife suffering from melancholy, according to her husband, sent to spend time by the sea with the paleontologist.

But the friendship they forge in the silence, between the search for bones and on the seashore will awaken emotions and sensations that could change their lives forever.

Throughout history, acclaimed actresses share sex scenes that have become Kate's favorites. Or, at least, the ones she is most proud of. She thus revealed it in an interview with THR assuring that her pride is due to having placed all her trust in the director and her partner when freely choreographing the intimate moments between them.

"Saoirse and I choreographed the scenes ourselves," says the 44-year-old actress, referring to one of the most explicit scenes we will see on the film. “It's definitely not like eating a sandwich. I think Saoirse and I feel very safe. Francis was naturally nervous and I said, 'Listen, let us do it.' And we did it ”.

“We started here. We did this with the kisses, the breasts, we go down here, you do that, you go up here… I mean, we set our rhythms in the scene to feel anchored to something that would support the narrative, ”adds Kate. “With Ammonite I feel the proudest thing I have ever felt doing a love scene. And by far it is the time that I felt less self-conscious ”.

Undoubtedly very different from his sex scene with Leonardo DiCaprio in the Titanic car which, not only was not in the script and was quickly created on the same day, but they had people from the team dousing them with Evian water to illustrate. the sweat of consummate passion.

It should be noted that, according to the same publication, Ammonite is a more intimate lesbian plot film than the acclaimed Carol where Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara shared romantic scenes. While that 2015 film also recounted a forbidden love in the eyes of 1950s society, in Ammonite it is even more so as we go back in time to an era of corsets and women without rights.

Kate and Saoirse, who are among the most prolific actresses of the moment, had met casually before shooting the film and the tandem seems perfect for awards season. Kate won the Oscar for The Reader (2008) and has six other nominations throughout her career. Saoirse, for her part, has not won it yet but at 26 years old she has been a favorite on all four occasions that she was nominated.

Ammonite will premiere first at the Toronto Film Festival and then in theaters in the US in November under the distribution of the same company that dominated the Oscars with Parasites this year and, as confirmed by THR, is their bet for the next ceremony. In Spain it still does not have a release date.
