The Mexican actress remembered the birth of the painter with a photograph on Instagram
Salma Hayek paid a peculiar tribute to the painter Frida Kahlo through her Instagram account.
Kahlo was born on July 6, 1907 and to celebrate her birthday, the actress published a photomontage.
In her post, she combined a color image of Kahlo with a photograph of her and her post has already received more than 260,000 "likes."
Hayek has never hidden her admiration for the famous Mexican painter, who was a partner of fellow painter Diego Rivera.
Salma herself achieved an Oscar nomination for Best Actress thanks to her portrayal of Kahlo in the film Frida, released in 2002.
The idea of bringing the tormented life of the Mexican painter to the big screen was a project that Madonna aspired to, but finally Hayek was the one who was able to crystallize that idea. "Madonna has already done Evita; she can't have everything," the Mexican actress declared at the time.
"I had to be Frida. It was a fixed idea in me since I was 14 years old. I wanted to bring to the screen the story of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, because it is a story of ours, of Mexico and of the Mexicans, which presents my country and my compatriots, as they are not normally seen in the cinema and at a stage in history in which the most sophisticated artists and thinkers in the world met in Mexico. In addition, I wanted to tell the story of Frida because she was a woman. completely free, a true individual, without fear of anything ", declared the actress more than 15 years ago, when she presented the film to the media in Spain.
Her interest in playing the painter even led her to endure the mistreatment of producer Harvey Weinstein, as revealed by Salma herself in a letter she published in The New York Times in February 2018.
Hayek recounted that Weinstein agreed to participate in Frida's project, but every day she was forced to reject her sexual advances.
When Weinstein realized that he would have no chance with Salma, he began to put pressure on the project and threatened to withdraw from production.
But the actress managed to bring the tape to life with the help of her lawyers and thanks to the fact that she made money herself and recruited top-notch actors.
So Weinstein asked for the Kahlo character to be more sensual and demanded that there be a lesbian sex scene with the actresses naked.
Julie Taymor, the director, managed to convince Weinstein that the scene was a tango dance between Hayek and Ashley Judd (who played photographer Tina Modotti) and that it end with a kiss.
Hayek said that the day they filmed that scene she suffered an anxiety attack and after crying, she ended up vomiting in front of the crew.
Despite the difficulties in filming, Salma managed to finish the film and was nominated for an Oscar.
