Salma Hayek recounts that Desperado movie sex scene was 'traumatic'

The film marked the entrance of the Mexican actress to Hollywood

When Robert Rodríguez's "Pistolero" hit theaters in 1995, it marked actress Salma Hayek's triumphant entry into the Hollywood industry.

With the character of Carolina, Hayek surprised the public because she also shared the screen with Antonio Banderas, however recording the romantic scene in which she appears naked in bed next to the Spaniard was a difficult moment that she still remembers.

"The love scene was not in the script, it was requested by the studio when they saw our chemistry and I had a very bad time doing it," the actress said in an interview for "Armchair Expert."

"Robert Rodríguez's wife at that time (Elizabeth Avellan), became my best friend, she was the producer. Robert could do everything on one set, the sound, operate the camera and he was like my brother so they closed the set and we were just Robert, Elizabeth, Antonio and me, that was nice except that I had never done anything like that so when we were going to start recording I started sobbing, "he said.

Salma recalled that she was very ashamed to cry and although the rest of the team tried to make her laugh, she could not contain herself, she only managed to remove the towel for a few seconds and sob again, she was also worried about her family's reaction when she saw the film, especially about his father.

"One of the things I was afraid of was Antonio because he is absolutely a gentleman, we are still good friends, but he was very free so it scared me because he was like nothing and I had never been in a situation like that.

"They were amazing, we did the best we could for that time, it was a great group of three, Robert was amazing," Hayek commented.

The Mexican actress also related how Rodríguez met her and that among the names that sounded for her character was that of actress Cameron Diaz. After Robert discovered her she still had to audition six more times and do screen tests.

"It was very exciting to have a job and let's remember that this was at a time when it was almost illegal to hire a Mexican in a leading role, it was impossible and the way I got it was like a miracle because Robert had done 'El mariachi 'with 7 thousand dollars, "he said.

"One night I couldn't sleep and I was watching television, changing the channels and there was a broadcast of an interview that a comedian named Paul Rodríguez did with me and he was making fun of me because I was a big star in Mexico, I was very famous in 'Teresa' that 60% of the country was watching this show and then I left (the country), I came to the United States, I was trying to learn English and I went to school with Stella Adler, and I started again as an extra " .

In those years it was difficult for the Mexican to start her career again, especially because of her prejudices towards Latinos because they told her that she was not going to have a job because there was no place for her. It was then that Salma said: "then I'm going to make it happen."
