Scarlett Johansson gets into the complex protagonist character of Ghost in the shell, which will probably be a turning point in her career.
Fans of the saga will have conflicting opinions about her role but the truth is that it was not easy to give life to the character of the animated film that was popularized in 1995 by Mamoru Oshii and which in turn came from the successful manga of the same name by Masamune Shirow.
So Scarlett Johansson is Motoko Kusanagi, the protagonist of the film (whose review you can read in the previous link). But before arriving here, she has done many other successful roles that it is worth remembering.

1. Lost in Translation (2003)
No introduction required. One of the best roles in Johansson's career and one of her most accomplished films (the best directed by Sofia Coppola alongside The Virgin Suicides, by far).
The photography was delicious, and so was the film. Attention to the sensuality of Johansson's shots in Coppola's camera. Too bad that Giovanni Ribisi's character didn't see how his girl was completely abandoned because of her ... Unforgivable, friend.
Thus, we were witnessing the peculiar relationship of an actor named Bob (Bill Murray) and Charlotte (Scarlett), a young woman who is found by chance in a Tokyo where everyone seems lost in life and where casual relationships can change your destiny. . Or not...
2. Match Point (2005)
One of Woody Allen's most accomplished films in recent years (best alongside Blue Jasmine, possibly). Accurate and realistic, with an air of drama and romance. For its success, apart from the great script, it should be noted that Scarlett was in a glorious role with Jonathan Rhys Meyers, giving off magnetism.
Okay, the film is quite similar to the plot of Crimes and Misdemeanors that Allen already shot in 1989. But what difference does that make if both are wonderful? With Allen the young actress repeated later in Scoop or Vicky Cristina Barcelona but the result was not so perfect.
If you are one of the few who have not seen Match Point yet, aim not to let it pass any more.
3. Under the skin (2013)
The film was never distributed in Spain (and on the one hand I understand it due to its excessive complexity). He went through festivals, at least. I'm not a big fan of the Jonathan Glazer film, where Johansson played some kind of alien who takes revenge on men.
In fact, neither the plot seems original nor the realization very surprising, but it caused a sensation in many circles that saw it as a jewel (perhaps because Scarlett appeared in her skin). Beyond this anecdote, the film is worth it if you are a fan of the Johansson, where it really shines as the best of the film. That is why it deserves to appear in this top. For her interpretation, which in the end turns out to be a saving role for the film.
4. Girl with a Pearl Earring (2003)
Naturalness and sensuality. All in one. How did the famous Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer from Delft come to paint the famous work of The Girl with a Pearl Earring? A film that was a goldsmith's work, with thousands of details of setting, of characters, of analyzing well the time and context of the painter and his environment and above all a cast to match.
Along with Scarlett Johansson, very well others like Colin Firth, Cillian Murphy or the always great Tom Wilkinson. Remarkable film by Peter Webber, for fans of art in general and painting and Johansson in particular.
5. Her (2013)
One of the most curious interpretations of Scarlett, where she "just" puts her voice. And I say "only" in quotes ironically because her role is the protagonist and fundamental along with the masterful role that Joaquin Phoenix provides. The truth is that Spike Jonze recognized that he wanted to film a history of relationships, where operating systems and machines had a decisive role before humans.
Johansson's warm and suggestive voice is almost half a movie. Of the best roles of her and that she does not appear on the screen. In fact, she won the Rome Festival Award for best actress.
Scarlett later worked on acceptable dubbing of other films but they were another format and way of working (she has participated in Sing or The Jungle Book). In Her de ella, her voice is 100% fundamental.

6. Don Jon (2013)
It is clear that 2013 was a crazy year of premieres for Scarlett Johansson (Her de ella, Under the Skin, Don Jon ...) but it is that curiously it was also prolific very suitable for her career thanks to the choice of roles her.
In the case of Don Jon, it is one of the bravest films of recent times about a young sex addict played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt (in a way with a theme similar to Shame, although it circulates in other directions).

7. Ghost World (2001)
Okay, you have to be frank. Scarlett here is only a supporting character but she plays the best friend of the protagonist (a splendid Thora Birch). When one delves into this film adaptation, the homonymous of the comic created by Daniel Clowes (who also wrote the script), one realizes that the film is great but a lot of fault for it is that the pair of friends works so well.
There Birch and Johansson formed a great team in their early days as performers. Terry Zwigoff directed in what has been the most valued film of her. Attention also to the appearance of the always enigmatic and attractive Steve Buscemi.
8. Hitchcock (2012)
This kind of biopic about the master of suspense focused on the stage in which the British director began to shoot his most famous film: Psycho.
Anthony Hopkins was trying to carry out his role as Alfred Hitchcock, Helen Mirren was his wife Alma Reville but the key to the film revolved around the character of Scarlett Johansson, a very young Janet Leigh who had a hard time filming in all the doggies to those that had to be submitted by the director.
A genius who could be very annoying at times ... ... Very well Sacha Gervasi's recreation of the filming of the shower scene. Unforgettable.
9. Lucy (2014)
This film was received unevenly and at the same time was one of Johansson's most recent works. Not everyone understood the story Luc Besson (who will soon release Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets with Cara Delevingne) wanted to tell us.
Seeing Lucy without knowing absolutely almost nothing about her can be shocking and a great experience. Some of us got it before extended synopses, clips, etc were shown ... and that helped make it more enjoyable. Likewise, if you know what its plot is about, fantastic and somewhat futuristic, you will see some signs of destruction but with intelligence within many planes.
10. Appearances in the Marvel Universe (as Black Widow)
I must say that I moderately liked seeing Scarlett Johansson in various projects such as The Prestige (The final trick), The Island, or the other appearances for Woody Allen apart from the highlighted Match Point (just remember that she also acted in Scoop or Vicky Cristina Barcelona).
But I must leave them out because in the top 10 it seems fair to include the signing of the actress in the Marvel universe of the Disney factory. Scarlett appeared as Black Widow and hers was her alter ego Natasha Romanoff in the following films: Iron Man 2, The Avengers, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Avengers: Age of Ultron, and Captain America: Civil War. We will see her soon in Infinity War. Her presence is always an added point, really.
