Black Widow: Scarlett Johansson refused to wear a sexy uniform in a Marvel movie
After nearly two years of waiting, Black Widow finally arrived in theaters with a promise to tell more details about Natasha Romanoff's past before she joined the Avengers. In her latest project for Marvel's Cinematographic Universe, actress Scarlett Johansson decided to remember some important moments of her career, such as when she refused to wear a sexy spy uniform for the recordings of Captain America and the Winter Soldier.
Recently, Marvel Studios Vice President Victoria Alonso confessed to some discomfort with the character's sexualization in Iron Man 2. However, during an interview with Fatherly, Johansson revealed that years later he still had to struggle with this issue. “There was a period where Marvel was interested in Natasha being some kind of shifter, always in some kind of disguise, and when we were doing 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier' — that's a really funny thing — the final look is fantastic and utility. But, there is a scene where she drives a beautiful car and takes the Captain on a mission. In the original version of the script, she appeared in white shoes, a blonde wig and the like. This was quickly discarded,” she declared.
The actress also explained what prompted the production to make this shift: “You work with a lot of male screenwriters, and things were changing. You have to be part of the change. The public is also demanding things and there is a cultural shift, which feeds everything in a more progressive direction. It has been a process.”
In another recent Collider interview, Scarlett Johansson vented on the character's hypersexualization in her first UCM appearance, “While [Iron Man 2] was a lot of fun and had great moments in it, the character was so sexualized, you know? It's like she's a piece of something, like a possession or something. A piece of meat, really.”

In the first feature of phase four of the MCU, Natasha must confront parts of her story, when a dangerous conspiracy linked to her past emerges. Pursued by a force that won't stop until it defeats her, Avenger will have to deal with her old life as a spy, reconnecting with old family members she left behind before becoming part of the Avengers.
