Fae Ellington labels Rihanna’s dress inappropriate
Noted broadcaster and cultural commentator, Fae Ellington, says that Rihanna's mode of dress at Monday's ceremony when she was announced as a national hero of Barbados was inappropriate for the occasion.
At the ceremony, Rihanna, whose given name is Robyn Fenty, wore an orange-coloured silk gown. She seemingly wore no bra, and what appeared to be her nipples captured the imagination of many.
"It was most inappropriate," Ellington said when asked by THE WEEKEND STAR to comment on the pop icon's mode of dress. "All her boobs were just jumping up and down in the frock."
Ellington, who is a specialist broadcaster for national events, said her immediate reaction upon seeing Rihanna at the national ceremony at which Barbados bade goodbye to the Queen as its head of state was,"Oh my god, what's that!"
"She may not have known that the announcement was going to be made, that she was going to be given the high honour of national hero. But at the same time, going into a function like that, that was inappropriate. I know she is pop culture and all of that, but there is a time and place for everything," said Ellington.
Her views were in stark contrast to Krystal Tomlinson, former president of the People's National Party Youth Organisation.
"Can you imagine her trying to get through the parking lot in Jamaica for this state ceremony?! I see the protocol officer wrapping her shoulders in a scarf," Tomlinson wrote on Twitter.
Oshane Johnson, a passerby in New Kingston, told THE WEEKEND STAR he thinks the 33-year-old billionaire should have worn something more culturally appropriate to the event, knowing she was getting such an honour.
"That really nuh look appropriate. She shoulda conduct harself likkle better caah she a get big honour. Fi the honour weh you a get, mi rather she woulda wear some Afro-cultural ting, weh har country have, just like you woulda see Nanny wear the tie-up-head ting, or Miss Lou woulda wear the bandana. She shoulda wear something towards the country fi know she a get that kinda honour deh," he said.
However, Marlene, a Kingston resident, said she saw no problem with Rihanna's attire.
"I don't know, it seems alright to me. I mean it's her status, her background, she's into entertainment you know, so what would you have expected."
