If you think celebrities dress ridiculous at the MET Gala, there are 5 things you should know

So as not to end up making a fool of yourself!

Yesterday a new version of the MET Gala was held and it was to be expected that the comments on the internet, questioning the decisions of those who attended, pointed to how “ridiculous they looked”.

I do not want to name anyone, but it is necessary to cite the recurring criticisms:

"Was the Met Gala the show of who is most ridiculous dressed ???"

"Which do you think wears the least ridiculous outfit?"

"Hey, that Metgala thing, is it a costume party?"

I don't know if the people who make those comments do it to look "funny" on the internet or because they really didn't take the time to google. Although I also understand, that it may not be any of the above, since to understand, some need to be taught. So I judge only up to a point.

Like many, when I was little I liked fashion and I also felt absolutely perplexed when I saw things on the catwalk that “no one would wear”. Bad or bad, rarely do fashion magazines show us the most “ridiculous” outfits that designers present.

It wasn't until I finished my first Fashion course at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York (online mode, mind you, it's more practical coming from these other corners of the world), that I understood fashion as something more than a simple daily outfit .

It is never too late to fall in love with fashion and much less, if they explain it to you. Here's what you need to know about the MET Gala and why it might seem ridiculous to you:

1. The main idea is to raise funds for the Institute of Costume, belonging to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York

When we talk about the MET, we are referring to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which many simply call “the MET”. In this museum, you can find the Costume Institute, which since 2014 has been renamed “Anna Wintour Costume Center”, thanks to the efforts of the Vogue editor to raise funds for its development.

With each gala, which takes place on the first Monday in May, not only are funds raised, but also the new annual exhibition begins.

2. The theme changes every year depending on the exhibition that opens

This year the theme was “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination. The exhibition will show the influence of Catholic aesthetics on fashion, where the Vatican itself approved the exhibition of garments that had never before left Rome.

The organizers knew that the show could be controversial, but they anticipate that by sending the invitations with a specific dress-code. This year, the dress-code was “Sundays Best”, which they summarized as the clothes with which they would go to Sunday mass. So, the options are: follow the theme of the sample, the dress code or none of the above and opt for a neutral outfit.

3. It is focused on Haute Couture, not on what will be sold in stores

The seasons and shows that are presented each year in the world of fashion are divided into two: Ready To Wear (also called Prêt-à-Porter) or "Ready to wear" and Haute Couture or Haute Couture. In the first group, garments are generally finished, in standardized sizes and sometimes mass-produced. In haute couture, garments are not intended for retail.

4. Fashion is celebrated as art, not clothing

Haute Couture is a very selective concept. Broadly speaking, the fashion houses that present on this catwalk must be located in Paris and belong to the official union. In Haute Couture, the garments are made to measure and there is only one model of each one. Haute couture garments are said to be "priceless" as they are manufactured to high quality standards, with many handcrafted details.

Some of the garments designed and built for haute couture are presented as an art exhibition by the fashion house.

5. Designers know you wouldn't wear that to everyday life

Certain garments or accessories featured at shows (some of them are also shown on ready-to-wear catwalks) are not meant to be worn or bought. Therefore, if you think “who would wear that”, it is probably because the designer did not make it to be worn, but to be exhibited.

Would you hang the Mona Lisa on your shoulder? Of course not! It is the same that happens with certain fashion designs. The clothing has a use that starts from the basic need (coat), then, some give it their own meaning and turn certain garments into their personal style. But fashion is much more than all that.

Fashion as such is art. What we end up using on a daily basis is a trend, in which certain colors presented on the catwalk and many other aesthetic concepts converge that shape what ends up on the hangers of your favorite store.

Therefore, the MET Gala is not an occasion to see who adapted best, but to celebrate fashion as the artistic expression that it is.
