The rape of Mónica Bellucci that outraged the cinema 17 years ago provokes again in Venice

The only character in the movie that I felt really distressed over was the character Alex, played by Monica Bellucci in the movie Irréversible. The movie is one of the most haunting movies I've ever seen, it's extremely well done, but it's terribly haunting.

The film is about how a brutal rape and beating perpetrated against Alex destroys her life and that of her boyfriend and her friend. It's one of the most shocking movies of all time, and it was done so well. But what happens to his characters (especially Alex) certainly left me heartbroken, and I'm sure anyone who watches the movie will feel the same way as me.

A little about the movie

The movie is then presented in reverse chronological order. The last scene (which would have been the first scene if the movie had been laid out chronologically) in the movie shows Alex reading a book in a park surrounded by other peaceful people and playing children. That was one of the most poignant scenes in the movie, because you realize that that will never happen again for Alex.

He is in a coma and, from what the movie suggests, it is unlikely that he will recover. The brutality of the entire rape scene (lasts about 10 minutes) will leave any normal person quite distressed. The tranquility of the last scene makes it worse because you realize the horrors Alex will face.

The reverse chronological representation of the film makes it very difficult for the viewer, when you realize that Alex was also pregnant. Now, she is in a coma and it is unlikely that she will recover: most likely, the baby will also be lost. Her boyfriend and her other friend will go to prison for their revenge attempt against Alex's rapist. And worst of all, the real rapist is unscathed at the end of it all.

So, not only do you grieve over what happens to Alex, but you realize that there is no justice for her as well. The criminal who did this to her will never pay for her crimes. Irreversible really is a very depressing movie at the end of it all: the horrible crime committed on Alex will remember etched in your mind for a long time. It can upset anyone - the movie really is that powerful.

What would I have liked to have seen instead?

Obviously, I would have liked someone to come and prevent the brutal rape in the first place. Just when Le Tenia (the rapist) throws a knife at Alex, it would have been great if her boyfriend and friend of hers had come and prevented the horrible incident. Otherwise, at least I would have liked justice to be done to that moron character. Sadly, that doesn't happen in the movie. But hey, then it wouldn't have had the same effect that the director was looking for.

Conclusion

So Alex from Irréversible is the only character in the movie that left me heartbroken. Incredibly distressing: Many people, in fact, abandoned the screening of this film due to the level of anguish they experienced while watching it. But it is an extremely well made movie, just be careful, you are likely to freak out and grieve while watching it.
