Meghan Markle Wears a Bold Red Dress to the Salute to Freedom Gala
The Duchess chose a vibrant Carolina Herrera gown for the NYC event.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are back on the red carpet. Ahead of Remembrance Day in the UK and Veteran's Day in the U.S., the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are in NYC for the annual Salute To Freedom Gala, an event which raises funds for the Intrepid Sea-Air-Space Museum's educational experiences. Tonight's appearance marks the first public gala the couple has attended since stepping back from their senior royal roles and moving to the United States, and this evening, Prince Harry will present the inaugural Intrepid Valor Award to "five service members, veterans and military families living with the invisible wounds of war."
The Duchess of Sussex chose a bold red dress by Carolina Herrera for the fête. She accessorized the gown, which featured a plunging neckline and a bow in the back, with a ballerina-esque bun, cat-eye makeup, red pointy-toe pumps, and a poppy pin. For those unfamiliar, in the UK, the floral brooch represents those soldiers who have lost their lives during wartime. The symbolism of the poppy is a tradition that dates back to WWI, when John McCrae wrote the poem "In Flanders Fields" following the loss of a friend in battle, and now, many wear poppies in November as a sign of remembrance.
Harry and Meghan have been busy this week; Prince Harry participated in a panel called The Internet Lie Machine, which was part of Wired magazine's RE-WIRED conference, and Meghan sat down for a wide-ranging conversation with the New York Times's Andrew Ross Sorkin and businesswoman Mellody Hobson, in which she advocated for paid family leave noting that it is "a humanitarian issue."
