Rachel Weisz opens up about her "essential" love scene with Rachel McAdams in 'Disobedience'

"The whole story of repression leads up to this moment"

Rachel Weisz has commented on her love scene with Rachel McAdams in Disobedience, calling it "essential". The film – which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival in September and is set for release in the US this month – has been highly applauded for the tasteful s**x scene which is not filmed through a male gaze.

Disobedience follows Ronit Krushka (Weisz) who returns to the Jewish Orthodox community of North London that she was shunned from decades earlier due to her childhood attraction to female friend Esti Kuperman (McAdams). The two women then enter into a transgressive lesbian affair.

"I think we both felt very vulnerable and there was a real sweetness," Weisz told The New York Times. "I don't know if male actors ask this question but I know women normally think, 'Is this s**x scene necessary?' And in this case, it's essential. The whole story of repression leads up to this moment. I think, particularly for Esti, the release of this big orgasm that she had was also a spiritual moment. It was about freedom."

Weisz went on to explain that she and the director, Sebastian Lelio, agreed that there were too many orgasms in the initial cut (where both woman experienced one) and decided that one of them needed to be taken out.
