Singer Dua Lipa sued for using a paparazzi photo of her on Instagram
British singer Dua Lipa is being sued after allegedly posting a photo of herself from a paparazzi on Instagram.
The 25-year-old star was photographed in a row at an airport in February 2019 and she shared the photo four days later with her fans "without permission or clearance," according to US court documents.
The photo, which was published on February 7, 2019 but later deleted, showed the star lining up, holding his plane ticket and her passport, while she wore an oversized hat.
In the caption, she wrote: "I will live under big fluffy hats until further notice."
Integral Images, which owns the copyright, said Lipa benefited from the photo, as her Instagram account serves as a marketing tool for her music.
She is asking for $ 150,000 (S $ 203,000) in damages and is also asking for an order prohibiting the singer from further acts of rape, as well as court costs.
Lipa, who recently won Best Pop Album at the Grammy Awards and Best Album at the Brit Awards for Future Nostalgia, isn't the first star to have the paparazzi set the table against her.
Under copyright laws, the photographer pressing the camera button generally owns the copyright to the photo and republishing it is an infringement unless permission is granted.
In 2019, singer Jennifer Lopez was sued by Splashy News and Picture Agency for posting a photo of herself and former baseball player Alex Rodriguez, her partner at the time, but the agency later voluntarily rejected the complaint with prejudice.
Model Gigi Hadid, actor Liam Hemsworth and reality TV star Khloe Kardashian were also prosecuted in similar cases, while singers Ariana Grande and Justin Bieber settled with photographer Robert Barbera in 2019.
