Actor Alec Baldwin fired a prop gun that killed a cinematographer and wounded the director during a shoot in New Mexico, in the United States, local police said Thursday.
Halyna Hutchins, 42, was injured when "a prop gun was fired by Alec Baldwin, producer and actor," the Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office said in a statement.
Hutchins "was transported via helicopter to the University of New Mexico Hospital, where she was pronounced dead by medical personnel," the text added.
'Rust' director Joel Souza was injured. He 'he was transported by ambulance' to a medical center for emergency care. As Frances Fisher, an actress in the film, posted on Twitter, Souza has already left the hospital.
The incident occurred at Bonanza Creek Ranch, a famous movie location in the United States, where 'Cowboys & Aliens' and 'Longmire' have also been filmed.
'Mr Baldwin was questioned by detectives. He offered his statements and answered his questions. He came voluntarily, and left the building after the questioning was over,' a spokesperson for the Santa Fe County Sheriff's Department said.
The 63-year-old actor was "seen crying" by a journalist from the Santa Fe New Mexican newspaper who released a photo of him shocked on the side of a road, which they identified near the sheriff's department.
No one has been arrested in the case and no charges have been filed, the office reported. Investigators are questioning witnesses.
"The entire cast and crew [of the film] are absolutely devastated by today's tragedy, and we want to convey our deepest condolences to Halyna's family and loved ones," a production spokesperson said in a statement.
"We have halted production of the film for an indeterminate period and are fully cooperating with the Santa Fe Police Department of Investigation," he added.
The patrols went to the accident site in the early afternoon, after receiving an emergency request.
Accidents
The American Cinematographer magazine selected Halyna Hutchins as one of the rising stars of the guild in 2019, according to its website.
Hutchnis, who lived in Los Angeles, was born in Ukraine and grew up on a Soviet military base within the Arctic Circle, according to that portal.
Movie sets often have rules for the use of prop weapons, but multiple accidents have been reported.
One of the most famous was when Brandon Lee, son of martial arts legend Bruce Lee, died during the filming of 'The Raven', after being shot with a gun that was supposed to fire dummy bullets.
Brandon Lee's sister, Shannon Lee, commented on the incident on Twitter.
"Our hearts go out to the family of Halyna Hutchins and Joel Souza and everyone involved in the 'Rust' incident," she posted on Brandon Lee's official Twitter account.
'Nobody should die from a gun on a shoot, ever,' she noted.
'Rust' is a Western movie starring Baldwin and directed by Souza. In the production, Baldwin plays Harland Rust, an outlaw whose grandson is accused of murder, and with whom he runs away when he is sentenced to hang for the crime.
Baldwin posted hours earlier on his Instagram account a photo of him, apparently taken during filming, dressed in western clothes. 'Back to the face-to-face office. Geez... it's exhausting,' he wrote in the caption of the post.
'Devastating news'
"We received the devastating news tonight that one of our members, Halyna Hutchins, the director of photography for the production 'Rust', died of injuries on set," reported a union of the film industry, quoted by the publication Variety .
"Details are unclear at this time, but we are working to find out more and support a full investigation into this tragic event."
Baldwin has acted in movies and on television since the 1980s.
In addition to a number of major roles, including "The Hunt for Red October," and appearances in the "Mission: Impossible" franchise, Baldwin has voiced animated characters in such hits as "The Boss Baby."
Recently, he gained much fame for his portrayal of former President Donald Trump on the comedy show 'Saturday Night Live,' for which he won an Emmy.
